Those looking to discover culture in Alexandrovsky District will find churches, museum spaces and art-historical themes in Alexandrov. The Alexandrovskaya Sloboda is a state historical, architectural and art-historical museum reserve in the city. There is also a kremlin with remarkable buildings, an art museum in a merchant's estate, and collections of crystals and rocks. These different areas of interest make it easy to tailor your stay around architecture, history or art.

Churches and Kremlin Buildings in Alexandrov

The Church of the Intercession is located in the centre of the kremlin, between the Church of the Dormition and the monks' cells. It is the first Russian stone tent-roof church and has the only known figuratively painted tent roof in Russia dating from the 16th century. Both the architectural form and the painted architecture are highlights of this building. The church is open as part of the Alexandrovskaya Sloboda museum exhibition; services are not currently held there. Check the current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The 17th-century Refectory can also be visited on the kremlin grounds. Until 1707, a small, single-storey building on the south side of the Crucifixion Bell Tower was the residence of Tsarevna Marfa Alexeyevna, the half-sister of Peter I. The Trinity Cathedral in Alexandrov was built in 1513. The Church of the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratelates is associated with a different location: it stands above the west gate of the Holy Dormition Monastery, on the side facing the Seraya River.

Art, Minerals and Poetry

The Alexandrov Art Museum is located in the estate complex of the merchant A. M. Pervushin, who belonged to the second guild. The Museum of Handcrafted Stone is housed in the building of the All-Russian Research Institute for Mineral Resources. Its collections include synthetic crystals, including cubic zirconia, garnet, malachite and opal, as well as natural gemstones and rocks. Here, you can distinguish between artificially created crystals and natural materials. Poetry enthusiasts may also enjoy the Marina and Anastasia Tsvetaeva Memorial Museum in Alexandrov.

Historical Programmes and Views

The interactive programme “Vybor tsarskoy nevesty” is based on a legend about a bride-selection event held in the 16th century at Alexandrovskaya Sloboda. By contrast, the staged performance “V gostyakh u kuptsa Pervushina” portrays merchant life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The two formats focus on different periods: a 16th-century legend and a portrayal of later merchant life. If you want to make one of them a firm part of your plans, check its current availability in advance. The bell tower of the Church of the Crucifixion offers a viewpoint over the surrounding area; if you plan to visit, check current access arrangements.
