Uvatskiy District is the northernmost and largest district by area in Tyumen Oblast, excluding the districts of the autonomous okrugs. Nature, history and crafts give a trip here a range of highlights: from a level circular trail in Turtas to traces of prehistoric settlement and birch-bark products still made today.

An educational trail with a clear route

The «V zelenom budushchem — zelenoe nastoyashchee» ecological educational trail in Turtas follows a level, one-kilometer circular route. It begins and ends alongside an operating ski trail at the ski base. Information boards explain the plant and animal species of Uvatsky District. For a walk with a specific nature theme, the circuit offers more than just a route: it draws attention to the species featured on the boards. Check local conditions before setting out.

The wooden sculptures «Dinozavr» and «Drevniy chelovek» are also located along the educational trail. Both were created for the international woodcarving competition «Chudotvortsy» and add a distinct cultural highlight along the route. In Uvat, the closing event of the eighth «Chudotvortsy» wood park sculpture festival took place on September 9, 2023; its theme was «Istoriya v mifakh i faktakh». This edition is a dated event, not information about a future program.

Nature, early history and crafts

Padalnyy mys is a natural monument offering views of the Irtysh. A prehistoric settlement dating from the 10th to 12th centuries BC was found at Koshelevskaya gora. The landscape and archaeological history offer two different ways to explore the district: one through a natural monument, the other through a site dating back to the distant past.

Birch-bark processing is another cultural tradition. A wide variety of birch-bark products have long been made in Uvatsky District. Pesteri—large backpacks woven from narrow strips of birch bark—are still made and are now mainly considered souvenirs. Their form illustrates the versatility of this craft material: birch bark is used not only for small objects but also for woven carrying containers.

If you would rather spend time by the water, you can fish in the district’s rivers and lakes.

Museum and digital discoveries

The cultural offerings of Uvatsky District include the local history museum «Legendy sedogo Irtysha». A 2019 description mentions the free «Artefact. Gid po muzeyam Rossii» app for museum visitors with smartphones. They could use it to identify exhibits marked with the AR logo and access detailed information about them; an audio guide was also available. Check before your visit whether the app and its features are still available.

The museum complements outdoor experiences with a cultural visit. Together with the educational trail, natural monument and birch-bark products, it offers a choice of landscapes, history, crafts and museums, without requiring every trip to focus on the same thing.

More to explore in Tyumen Oblast

As a broader travel destination, Tyumen Oblast offers additional cultural and landscape experiences. The white-stone Tobolsk Kremlin is an open-air architectural monument on a high plateau at the confluence of the Tobol and Irtysh rivers. It houses the Cathedral of Saint Sophia and the Dormition of the Mother of God, described as the oldest stone church in Siberia. All the Kremlin’s sites belong to the Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, which is designated a cultural heritage site of federal significance in Russia.

In Ishim, the P. P. Yershov Museum preserves the world’s largest collection of the fairy tale «Konyok-Gorbunok». The «Gorodskaya uprava» museum covers the Nikolskaya Fair, the development of merchant life and the city’s wartime history. In Yalutorovsk, the Decembrists’ Grove is a natural monument of regional significance; it covers about 90 hectares and is part of a historical and ecological route. These examples give an idea of the range of themes in Tyumen Oblast without equating them with the individual experiences in Uvatskiy District.
