Tobolsky District: Nature, Isker and Culture
Accommodation in Tobolsky District
Tobolsky District brings together several appealing perspectives: river scenery, protected nature and memories of the Siberian Khanate. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider whether nature, history or museum visits should shape your trip. The places in the district appeal to different interests, so you can plan your holiday around the experiences that matter to you.
The Irtysh, nature and special places
The Abalaksky Zakaznik lies on the right bank of the Irtysh. The Svyato-Znamensky Abalak Monastery also lies on the banks of the Irtysh; it is a monastery, while the Abalaksky Zakaznik is a nature reserve. Kartashovsky Bor is also among the district’s nature attractions. It is a natural monument of regional significance, established on 22 August 1968 by a resolution of the Executive Committee of the Tyumen Regional Council of Workers’ Deputies. Nearby is Lake Zauskanovskoye, about 25 km south of Tobolsk city centre and 34 m above sea level.
Isker and the history of the Khanate
The Isker Historical and Memorial Complex marks the site of the former city of Isker, the capital of the Siberian Khanate. The complex is a monument of federal significance and gives the historical subject a specific connection to place. If you want to include history as well as scenery in your plans, Isker offers a clear focal point.
Museums with different themes
The visitor area of the “Zolotaya Podkova” complex includes a Russian-style guest izba. It serves both as a museum of peasant life and as a pelmeni museum. These two uses bring everyday life and food culture together. Compared with Isker, the cultural focus here shifts from the history of a former capital to peasant life and pelmeni.
More perspectives in Tyumen Oblast
Tyumen Oblast also offers further regional perspectives. The white-stone Tobolsk Kremlin is an open-air architectural monument on a high plateau at the confluence of the Tobol and Irtysh rivers. It contains the Cathedral of St. Sophia and the Dormition of the Virgin, described as the oldest stone church in Siberia. All the Kremlin’s sites belong to the Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve, which is classified as a cultural heritage site of federal significance in Russia.
In Ishim, the P. P. Yershov Museum preserves the world’s largest collection of the fairy tale “Konyok-Gorbunok.” The “Gorodskaya Uprava” Museum in Ishim covers the Nikolskaya Fair, the development of merchant life and the city’s life during the war years. The view of Tyumen Oblast thus extends from architecture and church building to literature, trade and urban life.
In Tyumen Oblast, the Decembrists’ Grove in Yalutorovsk is a natural monument of regional significance; it covers about 90 hectares and forms part of a historical and ecological route.
