Ishim brings together literary history and striking traces of different eras. In the historic centre, you’ll encounter merchants’ houses, wooden buildings with carved window surrounds and examples of Soviet Constructivist architecture. Museums, an active Orthodox church and a riverside promenade complete the cityscape. Many of the historic centre’s sights are close to one another, making Ishim easy to explore on foot.

Architecture and History in the Cityscape

Among the historic buildings is the P. P. Ershov Museum. It is located in the historic centre in a former girls’ school, which opened on 1 October 1863. The museum building is listed as a cultural heritage site of regional significance. Ishim’s oldest street is also home to a rare surviving merchant estate. It was built in the early 20th century by Grigory Fyodorovich Klykov, a second-guild merchant. The estate is a historic building, not a museum.

The different architectural forms give the city’s history several visible chapters: surviving merchants’ houses stand alongside wooden houses with carved window surrounds and buildings in the Soviet Constructivist style. On the “Ishim Architecture” bus tour, a guide explains how architectural styles can be distinguished by details on the façades and how the cityscape has changed. The excursion covers architecture from different eras.

Literature and Museums

The P. P. Ershov Museum is dedicated, among other things, to the author of “The Little Humpbacked Horse.” One exhibition features characters from the fairy tale in porcelain and ceramics, as well as in Palekh miniatures, Gzhel painting, artistic cast iron, textiles and woodcarving. Another exhibition presents books by laureates of the P. P. Ershov Literary Prize. In the wider travel destination of Tyumen Oblast, the P. P. Yershov Museum in Ishim also houses the world’s largest collection related to the fairy tale “The Little Humpbacked Horse.”

Another exhibition is devoted to historic window frames from the Ishim area. A further exhibition covers the Romanov family’s final journey: in the spring of 1918, the train carrying Nicholas II, Alexandra Feodorovna and Grand Duchess Maria passed through Ishim railway station twice. The exhibition describes this part of the journey and the city’s role on the imperial family’s route from Tobolsk. Exhibition content may change. If you would like to see one of the exhibitions mentioned, check in advance whether it will be on display during your stay.

The museum is also home to the “Learned Cat” puppet theatre. Its repertoire includes more than ten performances, among them “The Little Humpbacked Horse,” “Barankin, Be Human!” based on a story by Valery Medvedev, and “The Girl and the Tsar,” about Praskovya Lupolova. The repertoire may change. Masterclasses for children and adults are also held at the museum throughout the year; specific dates and availability vary.

Memorial Sites and Bus Tours

A life-size section of the “Patriot” armoured train is on display in the station square. Workers at the Ishim railway junction built the train during the Great Patriotic War. It then travelled to the front and took part in combat.

The second bus tour is titled “Ishim – Russia’s Outpost in Siberia.” It passes through the historic part of the city and introduces important sights and events from the past. The two tours therefore offer different perspectives: one focuses on façades and architectural styles, while the other highlights historic places and events. For both tours, check in advance whether dates are available during your trip; no current timetable is provided.

A monument to Ivan Korkin stands in Korkin Square. According to tradition, his name is associated with the founding of Korkina Sloboda. Near the monument is a sculptural group by Boris Trogubov depicting a Cossack and a peasant, described as the settlement’s first residents.

Art, Church and Walks

Ishim’s art gallery hosts solo and group exhibitions, masterclasses and meet-ups. The programme may vary. The Epiphany Cathedral is an active Orthodox church and has the status of a bishop’s residence within the Ishim Diocese of the Tobolsk Metropolis. If you would like to attend a service during your visit, check the local service times in advance.

For a quieter part of the day, take a walk along the Ishim River promenade, perhaps after visiting Festival Park. You can stroll by the water, rest on a bench and look out over the river. The two-tiered section offers views of the riverbank and the neighbourhood on the opposite side. It adds a riverside walk to the historic stops, without suggesting that water-based activities are available.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Ishim, you can start by considering which aspects of the city you’d like to shape your days: architecture and historic sites, exhibitions and literature, or walks by the river.
