Vyshny Volochyok: Theater, Museums and Linen Craft
Accommodation in Vyshny Volochyok
The cultural offerings in Vyshny Volochyok range from theater and local and regional history to glass and linen crafts. You can tailor your stay to your own interests, whether that means seeing a performance, visiting historical exhibitions, or taking part in a hands-on craft activity. The theater’s repertoire also includes a range of formats, including children’s and musical performances.
Theater, Local History and Glass
The Vyshny Volochyok Regional Theater stages classics of world and Russian drama as well as modern productions. Its repertoire also includes children’s and musical performances. Check the current schedule when planning your visit.
The Vyshny Volochyok Local History Museum was founded on November 7, 1932, based on the collections of a secondary school. Its permanent exhibitions include the Vyshny Volochyok water system and the natural environment of the Vyshny Volochyok region, an art gallery, and topics in local and regional history. These include the city at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, archaeological antiquities of the Vyshny Volochyok region, and the region during the Great Patriotic War.
A separate highlight is the open collection, with more than 600 household and art glass objects dating from the 19th to the 21st century. This material-focused theme complements the historical and landscape perspectives of the permanent exhibitions. Visitors particularly interested in local history will find several chronological and thematic perspectives at the museum; the glass collection adds a further focus on design and everyday objects.
Hands-On Linen Crafts
The Linen Craft Museum was founded in the summer of 2024 by master craftspeople from the intermunicipal cultural center. It features three exhibitions: “Hand Processing of Flax,” “Exhibition of Linen Dolls,” and “The History of Flax Processing in the Vyshny Volochyok Region.” Together, these topics trace flax from the material and its processing to its regional history.
Visitors can also take part in workshops on making linen dolls, brooches, and good-luck pouches. If you’re looking for a hands-on activity in addition to exhibitions, this museum offers a different focus from the Local History Museum: textile crafts take center stage here, while the other museum focuses on local and regional history, nature, and glass.
The Wider Destination of Tver Oblast
The wider destination of Tver Oblast also offers nature experiences. The Central Forest Nature Reserve offers guided walks along the “Tajny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaja azbuka” ecological trails. The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” nature trail leads through a picturesque raised bog, with wide-open areas entirely covered in moss and unusual plants. Visitors travel in their own vehicles for an excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog.
Another hiking option in Tver Oblast is the trip to the “Barsuchikha” forest ranger station. It can be taken as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin; along the way, visitors see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. This gives visitors different options for the duration of a nature trip, while keeping the region’s landscape attractions distinct from the offerings in Vyshny Volochyok.
Torzhok, also in Tver Oblast, offers its own cultural and historical attractions. The Verkhnee gorodishche is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction in the city’s historic center. Novotorzhsky Borisoglebsky Monastery was founded in 1038 and is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. The “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals are held annually at the Novotorzhsky Kremlin. These regional examples broaden the picture of Tver Oblast to include archaeological history, monastic culture, and recurring festivals.
