Discover Torzhok: Local culture and nature in Tver Oblast
Accommodation in Torzhok
Torzhok combines tangible insights into the city’s history and culture with opportunities to explore more of Tver Oblast. In the town, the museum district, views from the observation platform at Novotorzhsky kremlin and an interactive programme about Pozharsky cutlets offer different experiences. Tver Oblast also has forest and bog landscapes, as well as other cultural destinations. When planning your holiday rental, you can therefore first decide whether to focus on Torzhok or on a trip that takes in additional regional themes.
Museum district, views and city history
The central building of Torzhok’s museum district is the «Muzeynye ryady». The district also includes the Ethnographic Centre and «Dom Rossii». There is an important practical detail to bear in mind when visiting the district: the «Muzeynye ryady» exhibition department has been closed for restoration since 15 April 2024. Check whether it has reopened before your visit.
The observation platform at Novotorzhsky kremlin offers a different view of the city: from there, you can see Torzhok. These two perspectives can easily be distinguished when planning a day out: the museums explore cultural themes, while the viewpoint focuses on the city itself.
«Dom Poyasa» also offers a city-history experience in a different format. Guests are offered a walk through a park, during which they can listen to a historical guided tour of Torzhok. The experience combines time outdoors with stories about the city; there is no set schedule.
A culinary experience by prior arrangement
The interactive programme «V gostyakh u Dariy Pozharskoy» includes a theatrical demonstration of how Pozharsky cutlets are prepared and a shared meal. You can take part in the programme by prior arrangement. This makes it different from a self-guided walk: the demonstration and shared meal are the main focus. If you would like to plan your trip around culinary experiences, make arrangements in advance.
More nature and cultural themes in Tver Oblast
The Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve in Tver Oblast offers several nature-focused activities. «Tayny Okovskogo lesa» and «Lesnaya azbuka» are among the reserve’s ecological trails. The «Boloto Staroselskiy mokh» nature trail crosses a raised bog with expansive open areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants. Visitors who choose an excursion to this raised bog need to use their own vehicle.
You can experience another landscape on a hike to Kordon «Barsuchikha»: the route passes through southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The hike can be done as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest hut. Tver Oblast thus offers a range of nature experiences, from open bogland to a combination of forest and bog along the hike.
The reserve’s visitor centre and nature museum are located on its central estate. The visitor centre features information about the organisation’s history and structure, regular exhibitions of children’s work and a souvenir shop. The nature museum focuses on the protected area’s main ecosystems and the species that live there; one room is dedicated to scientific research. Alongside the landscapes, these attractions offer another perspective: they provide an opportunity to learn about the reserve’s nature and the organisation’s work.
Tver Oblast also offers a different travel theme for culture enthusiasts: Nilova Pustyn is a monastery on Stolobny Island and a centre of religious and pilgrimage tourism. The region’s range of themes therefore extends from bog and forest landscapes to religious history. When choosing a holiday rental in Torzhok, you can include these wider regional interests in your travel plans without conflating the city’s local experiences with destinations elsewhere in the oblast.
