Sonkovsky District: Rivers, Churches and History
Accommodation in Sonkovsky District
In the east of Tver Oblast, Sonkovsky District lies in the headwaters of the Korozhechna and Sit rivers. The Korozhechna is a left tributary of the Volga, while the Sit is a right tributary of the Mologa. These two rivers provide a geographical frame of reference for the district. Other points of interest include churches and historic sites, as well as Sonkovo’s role as a railway junction. These focal points may help with your travel planning: Are you mainly interested in local history, planning to use rail connections, or looking at the district in the broader context of Tver Oblast?
Churches, Markets and Local History
The Sit is also associated with a precisely dated historical event. On March 4, 1238, a battle took place on its right bank, near the village of Bozhonka, between the troops of Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich of Vladimir and the Tatars. The river and the village name give this chapter of history a specific geographical setting.
The two-storey Church of the Holy Trinity stands in the village of Koy. It took more than ten years to build and was consecrated in 1731. Koy is also the birthplace of Alexander Petrovich Kunitsyn (1783–1840), a professor of moral philosophy at the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. The village’s history also includes five fairs a year, held over several centuries on the Feast of the Annunciation, Pentecost, the Feast of the Saviour, the Protection of the Mother of God, and St Nicholas’s Day.
In Sinevo-Dubrovo, the Tikhvin Church was built on the outskirts of the village between 1775 and 1784. The remains of the estate complex there include cascade ponds and acacia avenues. Another historic landmark in the district is the 19th-century Shchegolev merchant house. Visitors interested in cultural history will find a range of topics here: church architecture, a scholar’s biography, historic fairs, and the remains of an estate complex. Check current access to the churches and estate remains before making firm plans to visit.
Getting There and Transport
Sonkovo is now an important railway junction. Rail lines from there run to Moscow, St Petersburg, Rybinsk and Uglich. If rail travel is important for your journey, check the specific connections and timetables in advance. The Sonkovo–Bezhetsk–Tver road connects the district with the administrative centre of Tver Oblast; a bus service also connects the district to Tver. If travelling by car, check current road conditions; for bus journeys, check the timetable.
When looking for a holiday rental, these transport links and historic landmarks can help answer different planning questions. Those prioritising rail connections can consider destinations accessible from Sonkovo; those interested in local history can include Koy and Sinevo-Dubrovo in their plans.
More Nature Activities in Tver Oblast
The wider destination of Tver Oblast offers other nature-related excursions. Guided tours are offered at the Central Forest Nature Reserve on the ecological trails “Tajny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka”. The educational trail “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” passes through a raised bog with extensive open areas covered entirely in moss and unusual plants. Visitors travel in their own vehicles to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog for an excursion.
The hike to the “Barsuchiha” cordon also gives you a choice of duration: it can be taken as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin. Along the way, you will see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. These examples from Tver Oblast add a nature and hiking perspective to the churches and historic sites of Sonkovsky District.
