In Penovsky District, a water-rich landscape meets traces of regional history. The Volga and the Western Dvina flow through the district; more than 130 lakes give the area a distinctive landscape. On your trip, you can focus on nature and culture in different ways—from the large lakes and their islands to churches, crafts and a museum.

Lakes and Rivers in Penovsky District

The largest lakes include Vselug, Okhvat, Sterzh, Peno, Vitbino and Soblago. Most of the district’s lakes are of glacial-moraine origin. This describes their formation in connection with glaciers and moraine deposits, and also gives the lake landscape a geological context. The Western Dvina rises from the small Lake Dvinets in the western part of the district; the lake is six kilometers from Soblago railway station. The Volga flows through the northeastern part of the area.

The islands in Lake Vselug also add distinctive features: Novo-Solovetsky is one of the natural monuments of Penovsky District, while Malosolovetsky is also located in Lake Vselug. Those interested in the landscape will find several points of interest—from the lake that is the source of the Western Dvina to the two islands in Vselug. These details show how closely rivers, lakes and individual natural monuments are connected in descriptions of the district.

Churches and History

Settlements and a pagan shrine existed at Shirkov Pogost on Lake Vselug in ancient times. By the late 19th century, the pogost had become one of the significant religious centers. The Church of St. John the Baptist stands there at Shirkovsky Pogost, a wooden architectural monument dating to 1694. The sequence of early settlements, religious significance in the late 19th century and a 17th-century building gives this place a layered historical perspective.

Other churches add examples from different periods: the Church of the Holy Trinity stands in the village of Otolovo and dates to the 18th century. The Church of the Sign of the Most Holy Theotokos at Vetozhetka Pogost dates to the early 19th century. In Vseluki stands the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God, built in 1835. Taken together, these places offer different points of reference in time, and not all the buildings belong to the same period.

Everyday Life and Crafts at the Local History Museum

The Voroshilovsky Local History Museum offers a glimpse of life in a village in Tver Oblast in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its extensive collection includes objects from peasant daily life as well as examples of pottery, shoemaking and carpentry. The focus is therefore not only on historic buildings, but also on everyday activities and craftsmanship.

The museum was founded on May 5, 1969, by Ivan Ivanovich Smirnov (1940–1998). Its guided tours cover topics including the history of the Voroshilovo area from ancient times onward, the region’s folk crafts and trades, and life and culture in the peasant home. Visits are by prior arrangement. Those with a particular interest in regional history can thus weigh up visiting historic churches against taking a closer look at everyday objects and crafts.

A Trail as a Trip Activity in Its Own Right

The ecological educational trail in Penovsky District is a 2.5-kilometer walking route with an educational tour. Its stated length helps you plan a time slot for the trail; check locally before visiting to see whether anything has changed. As a nature-focused activity, it offers a different way to get to know the district alongside its historic churches and museum.

When looking for a vacation rental, you can first sort out your travel interests: would you like your stay to focus mainly on lakes and islands, or would you prefer to make more room for churches, regional history and crafts?
