In Nerl', impressive church architecture and the eventful history of a garden come together. Trinity Church offers a glimpse into the architecture of past centuries; Victory Park tells the story of the transformation of a former cemetery and shopping arcades. These places offer different starting points for a stay focused on cultural history.

Churches and Architectural History in Nerl'

The building’s history dates back to the 18th century: in the village of Troitsa-Nerl at the time, a Trinity Church was built on the banks of the Nerl River, based on a design by Matvey Fyodorovich Kazakov. Between 1823 and 1838, a new stone building was constructed in Nerl' in place of the earlier church. The monumental, five-domed Trinity Church was designed in the Empire style. It had side chapels dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God “Znamenie” and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The freestanding bell tower had two bell stages and eight bells.

The former Trinity Church building continues to serve as Nerl'’s House of Culture. Columns remain at two entrances; fragments of frescoes can be found in the roof space. In Nerl', historic architecture and the building’s later cultural use thus stand side by side. Another church in the town is dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God “Ozeryanskaya.” It was solemnly consecrated on June 21, 2005.

From Former Garden to Victory Park

A public garden was laid out in 1934 on the site of the former cemetery of Trinity Church and the shopping arcades. Linden and birch plantings expanded it in 1950 and 1965; in 1965, it was named Victory Park. The park’s history therefore offers a different focus from the churches: it is about the development of a public garden and the transformation of a site that had previously served a different purpose. The church architecture and the park’s history offer two distinct ways of exploring Nerl’s past.

Nature and Culture in Tver Oblast

Tver Oblast also offers distinctive nature and cultural experiences. Guided excursions are available in the Central Forest Nature Reserve along the ecological trails “Tajny Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka.” The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” ecological trail leads through an open raised bog with vast areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants. An excursion to this bog is also available; visitors use their own vehicle.

Another hike in Tver Oblast leads to the “Barsuchikha” ranger station. It can be planned as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin. Along the way, visitors see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The options therefore differ in a very concrete way: the bog excursion requires your own vehicle, while the hike to the ranger station can include an overnight stay in the forest cabin.

The Central Forest Nature Reserve’s natural history museum and visitor center at the Central Estate offer further insights. The museum presents the protected area’s main ecosystems and the species that live there; one hall is dedicated to scientific research. The visitor center provides information about the organization’s history and structure, regularly hosts an exhibition of children’s work, and has a souvenir shop.

In Torzhok, Tver Oblast, “Verkhneye gorodishche” is located in the historic center. It is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction. The “Novotorzhskiy kreml” hosts the “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals every year. Religious destinations in Tver Oblast include Nilova Pustyn, a monastery on Stolobny Island and a center for religious and pilgrimage tourism. The “Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy monastyr” in Torzhok was founded in 1038 and is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries.

When looking for a vacation rental in Nerl', it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: the town’s church and park history, or nature and cultural attractions elsewhere in Tver Oblast as well. The different ways to explore the reserve offer practical guidance without requiring you to choose a particular type of accommodation.
