Nagovye: Local History and the Surrounding Nature
Accommodation in Nagovye
Nagovye combines a distinctive local landmark with a diverse landscape in the surrounding area. The stone St. Nicholas Church tells the story of the village; Lake Nagov’ye offers a different focus, with its islands and varied shorelines. Local history and the natural environment thus offer two separate reasons to include Nagovye in your travel plans.
A church in the village, a lake nearby
The stone St. Nicholas Church in Nagovye was built in 1796 with funds from the estate owners Feodosiya Arbuzova, Evdokiya and Lyubov Selyonykh. The date and the names of the estate owners give the building a specific historical context. The church is no longer in use.
Lake Nagov’ye lies nearby. It covers 7.9 km², is 5.3 km long and 2.4 km wide at its broadest point. Its islands include Lipovyy, Dubov, Skurin and Delanets; they are among the regionally significant natural areas of Toropetsky District. The shorelines also vary in character: most are elevated and dry, and steep in places; in the northeast, they are low and marshy.
Nature experiences in Tver Oblast
In the wider travel destination of Tver Oblast, the Central Forest Reserve offers a distinct focus on nature. Guided tours are available on the ecological trails “Tainy Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya Azbuka.” The “Boloto Staroselskiy Mokh” nature trail passes through a picturesque raised bog with wide open areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants. The excursion to the “Staroselskiy Mokh” raised bog is made in your own vehicle.
Another hike leads to the “Barsuchikha” ranger station. Along the way, you will see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The tour can be planned as a day hike or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin. These options allow for different timeframes and offer a practical way to adapt the hike to the length of your trip.
The Central Estate grounds include a visitor centre with information about the organisation’s history and structure, a regular exhibition of children’s work and a souvenir shop. The reserve’s nature museum presents the protected area’s main ecosystems and interesting species living there; one room is dedicated to scientific research. Alongside the trails, visitors can explore exhibitions about nature and the work of the reserve.
Historical attractions and events in Tver Oblast
The cultural attractions of Tver Oblast also have their own appeal. In the historic centre of Torzhok, “Verkhneye gorodishche” is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction. The “Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy monastyr” in Torzhok was founded in 1038 and is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. The “Novotorzhskiy Kreml” hosts the “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals every year. If either is important to your travel plans, check the dates.
Plan your trip to suit you
When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to set a clear priority: would you like to focus on Nagovye, its St. Nicholas Church and the lakeside area, or should your trip also include the reserve trails and cultural attractions of Tver Oblast? This question helps you choose a location based on the experiences you want from your trip.
