Discover Kalyazin through its monastic history, museums, and views of the Volga. The city also tells the story of a landscape changed by the construction of the reservoir. Historic buildings and memories of that transformation stand side by side, offering two different perspectives for exploring the place.

Monastery Island, the Flooding, and Religious Buildings

In the 15th century, Makariy Kalyazinsky founded the Trinity Monastery on Monastery Island. The city of Kalyazin later grew up around the monastery. Following the creation of the Uglich Reservoir, Monastery Island was separated from the mainland. The Volgari Museum is dedicated to the history of the city that was flooded after the reservoir was created. The Makaryevskaya Chapel stands on the foundations of the Trinity Monastery; a monument to Macarius of Kalyazin is located on Karl Marx Street.

The Church of the Ascension of Christ is also part of this local history: it was built in 1787 next to the city cemetery, survived the flooding caused by the creation of the Uglich Reservoir, and was later restored. Its architecture combines neoclassical, eclectic, and Baroque elements. These different forms give the church a distinctive accent within the historic cityscape.

Houses, a Bridge, and the City’s History

Stone merchants’ houses from the 18th and 19th centuries stand on Moskovskaya Street. The two- and three-storey buildings are associated with the Ryzhkov, Korovkin, Semyonov, and Lyakhov families. They add the history of Kalyazin’s merchants’ houses to the picture of the city. The Gorbaty Bridge offers another perspective on the city’s development: built in 1935, it carries both a road and a railway line.

Museums of Monasteries, Photography, and Technology

The Kalyazin Local History Museum is housed in the Epiphany Church, built in 1781, and remains there today. Its collections include religious objects, paintings, graphic art, numismatics, and furniture, as well as ethnographic and archaeological holdings. From the collection of the Trinity Monastery of Kalyazin-Makariy, the museum preserves frescoes, icons, rare books, monumental paintings, engravings, lithographs, and photographic materials. A guided tour of the main exhibition presents the history of the Trinity Monastery for Men from the 15th to the 20th century and information about the life of Saint Makariy Kalyazinsky. The exhibits also include 17th-century documents and relics from royal households.

Other collections focus on different subjects: the Retro Garage Museum displays vintage cars as well as historic film and movie cameras, rotary-dial telephones, radio receivers, and typewriters. The Kalyazin Museum of Mobile Devices dedicates an exhibition to the history of the mobile phone and the former mobile-phone retailer Euroset. The Svetopis Museum explores the history of photography and cinematography. The Lace Museum, located at the House of Crafts, is also in Kalyazin; check whether it is currently open to visitors before making plans.

Fairy-Tale Themes and a Walk Along the Volga

The Gusiny Ostrov tourist park offers interactive programs featuring Baba Yaga and other characters from Russian fairy tales. A permanent exhibition by artists from Kalyazin has also opened indoors. Baba Yaga’s Estate is described as a museum complex with wooden houses, carved figures, and characters from Russian fairy tales. These fairy-tale themes provide a different focus from the monastery collections and the city’s history.

The riverfront promenade invites visitors to stroll with views of the Volga and the bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral rising above the water. The area has not yet been landscaped. The walk combines views of the river with one of Kalyazin’s striking landmarks.

A Different Nature Focus in Tver Oblast

The wider destination of Tver Oblast also offers its own nature-focused experiences. The Boloto Staroselskiy Mokh ecological trail in the Central Forest Reserve passes through a raised bog, with extensive open areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants. The hike to the Barsuchikha cordon can be taken as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest hut; along the way, visitors see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. These are different travel experiences from Kalyazin’s museums and buildings, offering a distinct nature focus within Tver Oblast.

Nature-focused experiences in the wider destination of Tver Oblast can be planned as a separate regional highlight.
