Kalininsky District: Music, Museums and Memorial Sites
Accommodation in Kalininsky District
Kalininsky District offers a wide range of themes to shape your travel plans: Russian Orthodox architecture, music and art history, memorial sites, nature and seasonal festivals. Options range from a church in Turginovo and museums in Knyazevo, Domotkanovo and Emmaus to a natural monument and farms with their own activities. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first consider which themes you want to shape your stay.
Church Architecture, Music and Art
The Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God in Turginovo is a Russian Orthodox brick church with five domes and four pillars. Its architecture is Neoclassical and includes elements of the pseudo-Russian style; it also has a multi-storey bell tower topped with a spire. The church was built between 1824 and 1835 and expanded between 1876 and 1887. Its design and history offer two distinct ways to explore this place of worship: its architectural features and its different construction phases.
The S. Ya. Lemeshev Folk Museum in Knyazevo displays 15 exhibition sections across five halls. The topics range from the singer’s childhood and youth, his family, and his first tutors and teachers to his years of training and creative work. The exhibition thus traces several stages of his life rather than focusing solely on his stage career.
The annual Lemeshev Song Festival also draws on the singer’s biography: it takes place in midsummer on his birthday. Amateur ensembles, professional artists and winners of international competitions gather in his honour. If the festival is important to your trip, check the exact event date in advance.
The V. A. Serov House Museum in Domotkanovo features an exhibition in four rooms of the house of Valerian Dmitrievich Derviz, the brother of the estate’s owner. It covers the history of the estate, its owners and guests, and the cultural life there. A separate section focuses on Serov’s time at the estate and the works he created there. In Emmaus, the V. A. Serov Museum has a different focus: its collection includes personal belongings, rare photographs, documents about lesser-known aspects of the artist’s life, and original paintings. The museum also offers lectures to support school lessons on decorative and applied arts, as well as the types and genres of painting.
Memorial Sites and Nature
The Mednoe Memorial Complex includes a Polish military cemetery with a memorial wall and a bell. Cast-iron plaques bear the names of the deceased, and metal crosses stand above 25 mass graves. The grounds of the Kalinin Front Museum contain a mass grave and military equipment. Its exhibition covers eleven major military operations. The two sites therefore have different focuses: one on the design of a cemetery and its memorial markers, the other on museum grounds and an exhibition of military history.
Akulkina Grove Protected Area is an active natural monument of regional significance, covering 4.5 hectares. It lies east of the village of Brednevo in the Turginovskoye rural settlement of Kalininsky District. Alongside museums and memorial sites, this clearly defined protected area is another theme you can use to shape your travel interests.
Festivals and Farm Activities
Every winter, Christmas and Maslenitsa celebrations take place in the Domotkanovo Museum Park. The programme includes traditional games and entertainment, concerts and theatrical performances. The “Lilac Domotkanovo” festival takes place in late May and is closely connected with the history of the estate. Together with the song festival in Knyazevo, these events offer several seasonal windows: winter, late May and midsummer.
La Fattoria Little Italy in Mednoe offers cheesemaking workshops and tastings of its own farm produce in the restaurant: cheese, meat, vegetables and bread. Contact the farm about current availability if these activities are important to your travel plans. At Ivanovka Farm in Davydovo, visitors can picnic, fish, make their own gifts or relax outdoors. Check current arrangements directly with the farm before your visit.
More Places to Explore in Tver Oblast
Tver Oblast also offers distinctive nature and cultural attractions. The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” ecological trail passes through a raised bog with wide open areas entirely covered in moss and unusual plants. The hike to the “Barsuchikha” cordon can be done as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin; along the way, you can see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. These two nature experiences differ in duration: a day trip or a route with an overnight stay.
In Torzhok, also in Tver Oblast, Verkhneye gorodishche is located in the historic centre. It is an archaeological monument of federal significance and a tourist attraction. The “Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy Monastyr” in Torzhok was founded in 1038 and is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. Tver Oblast’s cultural heritage therefore ranges from archaeological remains to a long monastic history.
