Glinniki lies on the left bank of the Volga. At the same time, the village’s story reflects a change in its location: in 1936, during the creation of the Ivankovo Reservoir, Glinniki was relocated to a new site near its original location. The riverbank and the village’s history thus give the destination two clear points of reference: its present-day location on the Volga and its relocation in the 20th century.

The history of the surrounding area also reaches far back. Near Glinniki, N. A. Chagin, owner of the Grigorovo estate, excavated six burial mounds in 1884. The metal everyday objects dating from the 10th century found there were handed over to the Tver Museum. The surrounding area also contains numerous burial mounds dated to the 11th and 12th centuries based on their finds. This gives the area two distinct archaeological periods: the 10th-century objects found in the 1884 excavation and the burial mounds dated to a later period.

Nature and culture in Tver Oblast

For a broader perspective beyond the individual village, Tver Oblast offers distinctive natural and cultural attractions. The Central Forest State Nature Biosphere Reserve offers an excursion to the “Staroselskiy mokh” raised bog, which visitors can reach in their own vehicle. The “Boloto Staroselskiy mokh” ecological trail passes through a scenic raised bog with vast, open areas completely covered in moss and unusual plants. Guided tours are also available on the “Tainy Okovskogo lesa” and “Lesnaya azbuka” ecological trails.

Another hiking option in the reserve leads to the “Barsuchikha” ranger station. It can be done as a day trip or with an overnight stay in a forest cabin; along the way, you can see southern taiga forest and a raised bog. The reserve’s central estate also has a visitor center and a nature museum. The visitor center provides information about the organization’s history and structure; children’s work is exhibited there regularly, and there is a souvenir shop. The nature museum presents the protected area’s main ecosystems and interesting species that live there. One room is dedicated to scientific research.

Archaeological and monastic attractions

One of Tver Oblast’s cultural highlights is Torzhok. The “Verkhneye gorodishche” archaeological site in the historic center is a federally significant monument and a tourist attraction. The Novotorzhskiy Borisoglebskiy Monastery in Torzhok was founded in 1038 and is one of Russia’s oldest Orthodox monasteries. The Novotorzhskiy Kremlin hosts the “Blin s Pripyokom” and “Kuzminki v Torzhke” festivals each year. The Nilova Pustyn Monastery is located on Stolobny Island and is a center for religious and pilgrimage tourism. Together, these places offer a range of cultural and historical attractions in Tver Oblast, from archaeological heritage and monasteries to recurring festivals.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide what to focus on: would you like Glinniki itself, with its location on the Volga and local history, to be the main focus, or would you prefer to plan your stay around nature experiences in the Central Forest Reserve or cultural attractions such as Torzhok? Choose your accommodation location based on which of these themes you want to shape your trip.
