West of the city of Resh lies the Rezhevskoy State Nature and Mineral Reserve—a destination with an unusually specific geological profile. The reserve is located on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains in Sverdlovsk Oblast, 60 km northeast of Yekaterinburg. Its surrounding area includes the villages of Lipovskoye, Firsovo, Cheremisskoye, Oktyabrskoye, and Koltashi.

A mineral province with a long history

The reserve was established in 1995 to protect and preserve a unique natural complex. This includes the Samotsvetnaya Polosa Urala mineral province, which has been known for more than 300 years. More than 170 mineral species occur within a relatively small area. This diversity is a defining feature of the region, ranging from Shaitansky agate-onyx and multicolored tourmaline to amethysts, emeralds, alexandrite, topaz, aquamarine, sapphire, ruby, and beryl.

The names illustrate the breadth of the mineralogical spectrum. For planning a trip, they point above all to a clear focus: here, nature experiences meet an area of particular significance to mineralogy. This makes Resh interesting for anyone who wants to plan a trip around not only the landscape but also geological features.

Trails in Lipovsky Geological Park

Lipovsky Geological Park has three hiking trails with specified lengths: “Plyazh” is 1,400 m long, “Tsvetnye gliny” 1,900 m, and “Smotrovaya ploshchadka” 4,860 m. This gives you a choice of routes of different lengths. When planning your excursions, you can distinguish these trails from the longer hikes in the reserve. Since routes may change, confirm the trail information with the reserve operator before setting out.

Two more hiking trails start in the village of Oktyabrskoye. The “Svyatilishche drevnikh” trail leads to the “Shaytan-kamen” rock; the hike is listed as taking six hours and covering 8 km. “Po Samotsvetnoy polose” leads to the Shaitansky Perelivt deposit and is described as taking seven hours and covering 10 km. Both hikes are described as suitable for people with moderate fitness and are listed for groups of up to ten people. The different time and distance details make it easier to compare the scope of the two tours. Check the current arrangements with the operator.

Mines and deposits in the Shaitansky section

The Shaitansky section forms the central part of the Rezhevskoy Nature and Mineral Reserve. Several mines are located near Oktyabrskoye and the village of Shaitanka: Jepischkina Jama, Granatowaja Kop, Kasjonnaja Jama, and a mine on the Kozicha River. The Shaitansky Perelivt deposit is also located in this section. These named places and the deposit provide a specific reference to the sites listed in the area, adding to the picture of the mineral province.

Plan your stay around your excursions

When looking for a vacation rental, you can start by considering which excursions will shape your stay: the trails in Lipovsky Geological Park or one of the longer hikes starting in Oktyabrskoye. This turns choosing a destination into a practical trip-planning decision. When comparing specific accommodations, check their locations in relation to the starting points you have chosen for your excursions. The distance and duration details also provide a clear basis for estimating how much time you want to spend hiking.
