Discover Balakovo: Strawberry Festival and Construction History
Accommodation in Balakovo
A strawberry festival and a monument to the participants in the five All-Union Komsomol construction projects showcase two different sides of Balakovo. The festival has been held annually since 2014 and offers interactive activities for children and adults. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check local announcements for the next date.
Strawberry Festival and Programme for Schoolchildren
Strawberries are also the theme of the “Klubnichnoye udovolstviye” programme. It is aimed at schoolchildren and includes a strawberry quest and making a strawberry souvenir. Group visits must be booked in advance. The festival and the programme are therefore different ways to experience the theme: the festival takes place annually and is for children and adults, while the “Klubnichnoye udovolstviye” programme is aimed at schoolchildren and requires advance booking for groups. If you plan to take part in this activity, be sure to book ahead.
A Monument with Five Stelae
The monument in Balakovo to the participants in the five All-Union Komsomol construction projects depicts two construction workers. Behind the figures are five stelae arranged in a semicircle. The combination of the two figures and the curved row makes the monument easy to take in as a whole. Those interested in the architectural forms of public monuments will find a specific example here, quite distinct from the interactive activities at the Strawberry Festival.
More Cultural Experiences in Saratov Oblast
Saratov Oblast is the wider travel destination; Volsk also offers a distinct focus on history and architecture. A total of 120 stone mansions were built in Volsk, many of which have survived to this day. The town’s history dates back to the late 17th century: the village of Malykovka originally stood on its site. In 1780, a decree by Catherine II made it a district town called Volgsk (Volsk), later Volsk. Volsk is the only town in Saratov Oblast to have the status of a historic settlement of federal significance.
Some buildings from the early 19th century, as well as entire architectural ensembles, have been preserved in the central square. Volsk was laid out according to a plan, with a regular street grid and rectangular blocks, as in Saint Petersburg. One striking example is the Gostiny Dvor, the former trading rows: its imposing colonnade stretches along an entire city block. The town’s history can be explored here at different scales, from the regular street plan to individual buildings.
Volsk’s main church, the Cathedral of the Life-Giving Trinity, was built in 2009 on the site of the Trinity Cathedral, destroyed in 1934. A former building also reflects changing uses: Children’s Art School No. 1 is housed in the former People’s Library named after Emperor Alexander II. It was built in 1898 to commemorate the victory in the War of 1812. On the embankment are a monument to Soviet statesman K. E. Voroshilov, a stele bearing the city’s founding date, and a monument to the sailors and fighters of the Volsk Red Flotilla.
A workshop in Volsk offers Volsk ceramics with an impressed pattern for purchase, as well as a toy-painting class. If you would like to join the class, confirm current availability before your visit. There are also designated routes for walking and cycling in Yuri Gagarin Park of the Conquerors of Space in Saratov Oblast. The region therefore offers both cultural and activity-based ideas, although these are not local features of Balakovo.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide what kind of trip you want: will your stay focus mainly on Balakovo and its local attractions, or would you like to include other places and activities in Saratov Oblast as part of a broader itinerary?
