Syzransky District appeals to travellers who want to discover forest landscapes, unusual rock formations and cultural history. Racheysky Bor is known for its mossy pine forests and stone labyrinths; near Troitskoye, a narrow trail leads through Kamenny Ovrag to sandstone cliffs and boulders. There are also spring areas and two churches in the village of Troitskoye. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth deciding early which of these interests matter most: forests and rocks call for a different focus than a visit centred on cultural history.

Forest, rock and navigation

Racheysky Bor, in the northern part of the district, is described as the only taiga pine forest in the southeast of the European part of Russia. Its landscape includes mossy pine forests, bilberry stands and cranberry bogs; it borders the forest-steppe. You can walk among stone labyrinths in its pine forest. At Kamenny Ovrag, a narrow trail leads through the ravine to sandstone cliffs, boulders and labyrinths; it runs near the village of Troitskoye and near the settlement of Peredovoy. Spring, summer and autumn are suitable seasons for visiting the trail. Mobile reception is not available everywhere in Racheysky Bor, and internet access may be unavailable. As network conditions can change, bring a printed map.

Springs and protected areas

The Gremyachiy natural monument is a forest of old pines, relict ferns and hazel shrubs. One of the headwaters of the Usa River flows through it, separating two types of forest. The Krymza River rises at a spring in a woodland with maple, alder and aspen. Several springs lie spaced apart at the bottom of a deep ravine in the Usa spring area. The water features therefore differ: a woodland spring at the source of the Krymza and scattered springs in the Usa ravine. Another protected area is the natural monument “Malousinskiye nagornye sosnyaki i dubravy,” a protected area of regional significance in Syzransky District.

Churches and planning your stay

The Bogorodskaya Church and the Troitskaya Church in the village of Troitskoye were built in the 18th century. The Troitskaya Church is partially in use; check in advance whether it can be visited on your planned date. The two churches provide a cultural-history theme alongside the district’s landscapes. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether forests and rocks, spring areas or architectural history should shape your stay. If you are planning a trip with children, the rock formations, different forest types and 18th-century churches offer a variety of topics to talk about. Then focus your search on the destinations that matter most for your trip.

A wider look at Samara Oblast

For a broader view of Samara Oblast, Samarskaya Luka offers a distinctive landscape setting. It is formed by a bend in the Volga and the Usinsky Bay of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. The “LukAmorje” nature trail is less than a kilometre long and introduces the plants of Samarskaya Luka. The 1.3-kilometre “Vedmino Osero” trail begins at the entrance to Bakhilovo. Along the way, visitors learn about the village’s origins; at the lake, old Mordvin stories and legends are shared. Check the trails’ current operating information before your visit.
