The Sakha Republic (Yakutia) combines impressive landscapes with distinctive natural and cultural destinations. On the banks of the Lena, the rock pillars of Lena Pillars Nature Park rise about 100 metres in the central part of the republic. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide what to focus on during your trip: rock and river landscapes, seasonal nature experiences or museums in Yakutsk each call for different plans.

Rock landscapes and traces of Earth's history

The pillars along the Lena are rock ramparts separated by deep, steep gorges. These formed through frost wedging along fissures. The Lena Pillars Nature Park area also contains important evidence of events associated with the Cambrian explosion, a turning point in the development of life on Earth. The Great Cambrian Route offers another way to explore the region's geology: it runs for 115 kilometres along the left bank of the Lena and provides geological information about the development of the Earth's crust from the Lower Cambrian onwards.

Other landscapes have their own distinctive character. Saamys-Kumaga is a relatively small but typical tukulan (sand dune) in Lena Pillars National Park. The Buluus Landscape and Hydrological Nature Reserve is another striking natural destination: in some places, the ice field is three metres thick. In summer, the glacier partially thaws, creating hollows that resemble caves and crevices.

Landmarks of Momsky Nature Park include the Great Momsky Ice Field, Ulakhan Taryn, Mount Pobeda and the Balagan-Taas volcanic dome. Marble Mountain is also listed among the landmarks. If you are weighing up different landscape themes, you will find a contrast here to the rock pillars along the Lena and the Buluus ice field.

Seasonal experiences by the river and in the park

In the Labydya recreation zone below the Lena Pillars, a two-kilometre ecological trail leads to a viewing platform. The park lists its operating season as running from winter into summer. Visitors can also take part in the Algys blessing ritual in the Labydya tourism zone; check with the park in advance about the specific arrangements for visits.

To reach Labydya in winter, take the R-004 Umnas Republic Highway to Batamay, then continue along an additional five-kilometre winter road that is specially prepared. This seasonal route is a separate planning consideration if you are thinking about a stay with experiences in the Lena Pillars area.

A forest bison breeding station of the same name is located at the mouth of the Buotama, in the area where the river meets the Lena. Check with the park about current arrangements for visits. Rafting trips also take place on the Buotama in summer. The Lena Pillars are accessible from Yakutsk by water transport on the Lena, including cruises and private operators. Since water transport is seasonal, check current availability before your trip.

Yakutsk and historical discoveries

Yakutsk is home to the northernmost Museum of the Bank of Russia. It displays unusual forms of money and money substitutes that circulated in Yakutia from 1921 to 2003. Visitors can work with calculating equipment and learn how banknotes are authenticated. Advance registration for a guided tour is required for museum visits.

The Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk also has a distinctive collection focus: its osteological collection comprises 1,450 objects, including bone remains of representatives of the mammoth fauna of northeastern Siberia and fossils of mammals with soft tissues. Ask the museum directly about its current exhibitions. If you are looking for a holiday rental with a cultural focus, the museums in Yakutsk offer a concrete point of reference when choosing a destination.

Another kind of historical discovery awaits at the Diring-Yuryakh archaeological site in Lena Pillars National Park. It was discovered in 1984 by Yuri Mochanov and Svetlana Fedoseyeva and is accessible only in summer. Kolyma Nature Park is located in Srednekolymsky Ulus. The “Rafting on the Siver River” tour is also based in this ulus; it involves travelling in inflatable boats and is seasonal. Check the current arrangements before your trip. The different nature, culture and activity options can help you tailor your holiday rental search to the experiences that matter most for your trip.
