Konstantinovo: Yesenin’s Estate and the Oka Landscape
Accommodation in Konstantinovo
Konstantinovo brings together the history of Sergey Yesenin and the cultural landscape along the Oka. In the center of the village stands the stone Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan on the riverbank. It was built in 1779 to a design by architect I. E. Starov. Opposite is the Yesenin family estate. The church and estate thus stand directly opposite one another at the heart of the village—two tangible points of interest for a stay focused on architecture and the history associated with the poet.
Yesenin’s Sites and the History of the Village
The S. A. Yesenin State Museum Reserve has several visitor attractions in Konstantinovo: the Yesenin family estate, the Konstantinovskaya School, the house of priest I. Ya. Smirnov, L. I. Kashina’s estate with the Anna Snegina Poetry Museum, the coach house, the orangery, the granary, the bathhouse, and the Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan. Their names point to different aspects of the village, from historic homes to exhibition venues.
A house museum dedicated to the poet opened in the Yesenin family’s “golden log cabin” in 1965. Another distinctive building on the estate is the granary, built in 1913: it is the only building on the estate constructed during Yesenin’s lifetime. The poet liked to work on his writing there. The house museum and the granary thus represent two different connections to Yesenin: remembrance of the poet and a place where he himself wrote.
Discoveries at L. I. Kashina’s Estate
L. I. Kashina’s estate houses Sergey Yesenin’s Anna Snegina Poetry Museum. The exhibition explores the lives of the Kashin family and their guests, as well as the poet’s fellow villagers. Household items used at the estate and information about the domestic staff’s lives and duties offer a glimpse into everyday life in the house. On the first floor, the interiors have been recreated as they were when Sergey Yesenin visited the house.
Other buildings on the estate also have their own functions and stories. The coach house now serves as an exhibition space for temporary exhibitions. The orangery, restored in 2020, displays fruit and ornamental plants, including oranges, olives, figs, pomegranates, lemons, pineapples, and mandarins. The owners of the time were already cultivating these and other plants in the early 20th century. The Konstantinovskaya School is also part of the visitor attractions in Konstantinovo: its building, restored in 1995, houses an exhibition.
The Oka Landscape and Practical Information
Podgorye lies in the northern part of the Konstantinovskoye Plateau and forms the Oka Valley slope, which is crossed by numerous ravines. The “Konstantinovskoye Podgorye” ecological trail is connected with Konstantinovo and its surroundings. May to October is listed as the visiting period; check with the museum in advance for current visiting options.
A bus service from the Central Bus Station in Ryazan runs via Rybnoye to Konstantinovo and on to Vakino; the timetable lists it as daily. Check current departure times before you travel.
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Konstantinovo, you can choose a location based on the focus of your trip: the church and the Yesenin family estate opposite it are in the center, while L. I. Kashina’s estate offers further exhibitions and historical insights. Podgorye adds the landscape of the Oka Valley to the area’s cultural history. Konstantinovo is therefore a suitable destination for travelers who want to include both Yesenin’s sites and the landscape in their plans.
