Ryazan brings together open historic spaces, museums, art, and stories from city life. Whether you want to stroll through the Kremlin grounds, view collections, or discover special details on a city tour, the different themes can help guide your travel plans.

Kremlin Grounds and Art Collections

The Ryazan Kremlin is an open, scenic area for walks and encounters, surrounded by historic and architectural monuments, including the rampart. The grounds also house exhibitions of the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. They present its collections as well as the history and culture of Ryazan and Ryazan Oblast. Specific exhibition themes may change.

The I. P. Pozhalostin Ryazan Art Museum also brings art together with a distinctive building: it is housed in an early 19th-century mansion in the Palace Neoclassical style. Its collection includes works by Vladimir Borovikovsky, Vasily Tropinin, Alexei Venetsianov, Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexei Savrasov, Isaac Levitan, Ivan Shishkin, Vasily Surikov, and Konstantin Korovin. For another perspective on visual culture, visit Fotodom in Ryazan, an exhibition space devoted to the aesthetics and history of photography.

Museums and City Stories

The Museum of the History of the Guards Airborne Forces is located in the building of the Military Airborne School. Exhibits include historic banners of airborne divisions and brigades from the Great Patriotic War, as well as domestic and foreign small arms, parachute collections, and military and airborne equipment. Visitors can also become part of a dynamic panorama recreating a moment in battle. The museum offers a different focus from the city’s art collections and literary traces.

A walking tour titled «Marshrut po Ryazani dlya samykh vnimatelnykh» begins at a cheerful, wide-eyed porcini mushroom sculpture on Pochtovaya Street. Literary history is also visible in the city’s public spaces: in the courtyard of the house where Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin lived, there is a sgraffito portrait of the young writer. It was created by artist Pavel Shugurov «33+1» together with Ryazan city guide Nikolai Litvinov. At the Alexander Solzhenitsyn Museum Center, the «Kabinety pisateley» section explores Ryazan’s literary history in the 19th and 20th centuries. If this is a deciding factor for you, check the current display before visiting.

The «Ryazanskaya VDNKh» residence of Ryazan brands also has museums and exhibition spaces. The Lower City Garden reopened in October 2024 after restoration and is a place to relax and enjoy leisurely walks accompanied by soft music. Nearby, by the art museum, the first sculpture in the «Griby s glazami» series was installed; it depicts a family of porcini mushrooms.

Walks, Cycling Paths, and Ryazan Oblast

For those interested in cycling as well as walking, Lybedsky Boulevard has bike paths and a pump track. These offer a more active city focus to complement the culture-oriented stops, without requiring you to limit your itinerary to a single theme.

At the level of Ryazan Oblast, Meshchersky National Park adds a distinct regional focus. The park covers 103,014 hectares in Ryazansky and Klepikovsky Districts. Of its ten marked tourist routes, six are water routes; five ecological trails also run through the park. The long «Paustovsky Trail» reaches Kordon 273, while the shorter routes are called «Okno v prirodu», «Tyukov grad - Chernaya gora», «Zapovednaya priroda», and «U zavodi». These routes are in Ryazan Oblast and should be distinguished from the city itinerary. Check with the park before visiting to find out which trails are currently available.

If the Kremlin, museums, and city walks are your main focus, you can narrow your search to a vacation rental in Ryazan. If you also want to include the national park’s ecological trails, add Ryazan Oblast to your wider travel plans.
