Discover Makovo: Church and Local History
Accommodation in Makovo
Makovo is best explored through its church history. The stone Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God brings together several specific dates with a clearly structured architectural design: it includes a refectory, an attached bell tower and two side chapels. For travellers interested in architectural history and religious culture, there are many details here that help tell the story of the place.
Makovo Church and Local History
A parish church already existed in Makovo before 1616. A wooden church was dismantled in 1772; in its place, Pyotr Andreyevich Kolychev had the stone Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God built. The construction date of the stone church is therefore not established: 1772 refers to the dismantling of the wooden building. The place name also has an older form: Makovo was formerly known as the village of Inyakhino with the settlement of Makovaya.
The refectory and bell tower were built at the same time as the church; the refectory was enlarged in 1859. The exterior of the church is plastered. The refectory contains two side chapels: one is dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Rostov and Saint Philip, Metropolitan of Moscow, and the other to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. Alongside its external form, the different dedications give the building a layered religious history.
As of January 2020, regular services were held in the church. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check current service times and access arrangements in advance. For families, local history can provide a shared conversation starter: What distinguishes a wooden building from a stone one, and how can former place names reveal something about a village’s history?
Nature and Culture in Ryazan Oblast
As a broader regional setting, Ryazan Oblast also offers nature-related attractions. Meshchersky National Park covers 103,014 hectares in the Ryazansky and Klepikovsky districts of Ryazan Oblast. Within the park, the floodplains of the Oka and Pra rivers were designated wetlands of international importance in 1994 under the Ramsar Convention. Of the ten established tourist routes, six are water routes. Five ecological trails also run through the park: the long “Paustovsky Trail” to Kordon 273, as well as the shorter “Okno v prirodu”, “Tyukov grad - Chernaya gora”, “Zapovednaya priroda” and “U zavodi” trails. If you plan to take one of these routes, check current availability with the national park.
The museums of the oblast each focus on different subjects. The Museum of Wooden Architecture in Lunkino displays artistic wood carvings, painted wood, willow-woven items and other exhibits; around 3,500 objects are on display in total. The Kasimov Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve has more than 40,000 collection items and offers craft workshops at its “School of Crafts”. Information about workshop dates and bookings is available in the museum’s visitor information.
At the Georgy Wagner Historical and Archaeological Museum in Spassk-Ryazansky, archaeological and palaeontological collections are presented alongside a nature section about wildlife from the Oksky Nature Reserve. A diorama of Old Ryazan and archaeological finds bring the history of the Grand Principality of Ryazan to life. The galleries cover the history, everyday life and culture of the Spassk area from antiquity to the mid-20th century. The region’s museum themes therefore vary considerably, from nature and archaeological finds to crafts and everyday history.
Other distinctive cultural attractions can be found in different parts of Ryazan Oblast. In Mikhailov, the Museum of Mikhailov Lace is located at the folk art enterprise “Truzhenitsa”. The Veniz craft originated in Kadom when “Venetian” was shortened to “Veniz” and foreign materials were adapted to local production. An international ceramics festival takes place every two years in Skopin; check current event dates when planning a visit. The arboretum at the Khudekov Estate in Erlino is home to 88 species of trees and shrubs from 17 families and 42 genera. The estate’s visitor programmes include horseback riding.
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what kind of trip you want: would you like Makovo’s church and local history to be the focus, or would you prefer to combine several distinct destinations in Ryazan Oblast? For a broader trip, plan park routes, workshops and events around their current schedules.
