Kasimov can be explored through several distinct cultural themes: historic architecture, museums and traditional crafts. These range from specific printing and weaving techniques to buildings and collections with different areas of focus. If you like to explore individual subjects in depth during your trip, you’ll find plenty of starting points here for a stay centred on culture and the town’s history.

Discover the Crafts

At the Kasimov Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, the craft school offers workshops on Kasimov printing and painting techniques, making ritual protective dolls and birch-bark toys. There is also weaving on an ethnographic loom and working with a berdо. The range extends from motifs and finished objects to the processes behind the crafts. The Virkovo Craft Museum has a different focus: it displays the world’s largest collection of Virkovo ceramics and Virkovo toys. The exhibition explores the history, techniques and artistic features of this village craft, as well as the way of life, traditions and culture of the people who practised it. Here, you can discover two distinct perspectives on crafts: hands-on workshop activities and an exhibition that also considers the trade’s social and cultural context.

Architecture Spanning Different Periods

Sobornaya Square is home to an architectural ensemble of listed buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. These include noble and merchant houses, public and administrative buildings, commercial premises and churches. Many of the buildings were constructed to designs by I. S. Gagin. The square offers a glimpse of different building types and the architecture of several centuries.

The Khan Mosque also brings together different historical periods: it dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, but has a 15th-century minaret. The “Kasimovskaya Chekanka” gallery has another distinctive architectural history. It is housed in the 19th-century Salazkin merchant house, whose neo-Gothic extension once accommodated a Lutheran church. Together, the mosque, the ensemble and the merchant house offer different ways to explore Kasimov’s architectural and urban history, without suggesting that every building represents the same period or function.

Museums and Collections

The “Russian Samovar” Museum is in the historic centre of Kasimov and displays more than 400 exhibits. The Museum of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Kasimov Land has a collection of more than 300 exhibits, including handwritten and printed works from the 17th to 19th centuries, letters, documents and liturgical books. It also features church objects from the 16th to 19th centuries, such as priestly vestments and liturgical vessels, as well as icons, photographs and information panels about saints and ascetic witnesses of the faith from the Kasimov Land. Documents, religious objects and images offer different ways to explore history and religious practice. If you plan your trip around your interests, these collections can provide a distinct focus alongside architecture and crafts.

Another Perspective on Ryazan Oblast

In the wider destination of Ryazan Oblast, Meshchersky National Park offers a distinct focus on nature and landscapes. It covers 103,014 hectares in Ryazansky and Klepikovsky Districts. The floodplains of the Oka and Pra rivers within the park were designated wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention in 1994.

Of the ten established tourist routes in the park, six are water routes. There are also five ecological trails through the national park: the long “Paustovsky Trail” to Kordon 273, and the shorter trails “Okno v prirodu,” “Tyukov grad - Chernaya gora,” “Zapovednaya priroda” and “U zavodi.” Check with the park for current route availability when planning a specific trip. Another cultural stop in the wider destination is the Museum of Wooden Architecture in Lunkino. It displays around 3,500 objects, including artistic wood carvings, painted woodwork and willow weaving. In this regional overview, nature trails and craft collections offer distinct themes side by side.
