Novocherkassk combines striking architecture and memorial sites with a cycling route through a grove. Discover the city’s history through its buildings and museums, while the Krasnaya Vesna route adds an active dimension. When planning your stay, you can decide whether cultural history, art and architecture or outdoor activities should play a greater role.

Triumphal Arches and Memorial Sites

Two large triumphal arches made of stone and brick were built between 1814 and 1817 at the western and northeastern entrances to Novocherkassk. They symbolize the victory of Russian arms in the Patriotic War of 1812 and resemble the arches in St. Petersburg. The construction period and the war commemorated are therefore clearly distinct: the arches were built a few years after the event to which they are dedicated.

Another historic attraction is the Museum of the History of the Don Cossacks. It opened on November 22, 1899, on the initiative of enthusiasts of Don antiquities. The Kurgan Slavy, dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, also stands in Alexandrovsky Garden. It opened on May 8, 1980. Its features include an observation platform, stone slabs bearing the Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union and a list of Hero Cities, and four bayonets symbolizing the years 1941 to 1945.

Palace, Art and Regional Themes

The Ataman Palace is also located in Alexandrovsky Garden. It was built between 1860 and 1863. Museum exhibits are displayed on the ground floor; on the second floor, an exhibition showcases the historical furnishings of the dining room, large living room, reception rooms and Ataman’s study. The palace thus combines the history of its own construction with insights into a range of historic living and reception rooms.

The Krylov Museum memorial complex comprises Krylov’s house and the “Artist’s Studio” exhibition on the ground floor of a neighboring five-story building. The house retains a layout typical of buildings in the Don Host Oblast in the second half of the 19th century. Most of the items on display belonged to the artist and his family. The complex therefore highlights both the building’s design and personal objects.

Another regional focus is the history of viticulture and winemaking on the Don. The museum dedicated to these subjects is located on the grounds of the All-Russian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking, at the entrance to Novocherkassk from the direction of Rostov. In addition to the history of viticulture and winemaking on the Don, its exhibits also cover the ancient history of these subjects.

Cathedral, Theater and Architecture

The Patriarchal Military All-Cossack Ascension Cathedral was founded along with the city in 1805 and is built in the Neo-Byzantine style. The cathedral complex also includes the Lower Pokrovsky Church. Check the current access arrangements for this church before visiting. For a stay focused on architecture and urban history, the cathedral offers another perspective on Novocherkassk’s architectural history.

The Don Theater of Drama and Comedy named after V. F. Komissarzhevskaya is also part of the city’s cultural history: it was founded in 1825. Together with the Museum of the History of the Don Cossacks, the Krylov complex and the Triumphal Arches, it offers a varied range of themes, from theater and art to regional history and remembrance.

Krasnaya Vesna Cycling Route and Choosing Accommodation

For those who want to include outdoor activities alongside cultural attractions, the 4.3-kilometer Krasnaya Vesna cycling route offers another option. It runs through the Krasnaya Vesna grove and is suitable for cycling and walking. The route begins near the Cadet Corps, follows the pond and ends at springs. These specific landmarks give the route its own character, while its length can also help you plan your day.

You can prioritize the different themes according to your travel interests: the Triumphal Arches, cathedral and museums represent architecture and history; the Kurgan Slavy adds a focus on remembrance, while the route through the grove offers exercise and time outdoors. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Novocherkassk, it may help to first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. Then choose accommodation whose location suits your own itinerary.
