In Azov District, waterscapes, forests, coastline and insights into the history of the Azov coastal region exist side by side. There are also routes for walks and cycling, horseback rides, as well as guided tours and wine tastings by prior arrangement. Which of these aspects appeals to you most may shape your choice of holiday destination.

Water, forests and varied natural landscapes

One extensive natural area is the «Delta Dona» section of the «Donskoy» Nature Park. The 2017 regional regulation describes it as covering 25,516.88 ha and locates it in the Azov, Myasnikovsky and Neklinovsky districts. The section therefore extends beyond a single district. Those interested in the nature of the Don Delta will find a large-scale point of reference within the park here.

Another waterside destination is Lake Pelenkino near the village of Platono-Petrovka. It is known for its therapeutic mud. In this way, an extensive delta area and a single lake with a clearly identified special feature represent two different natural landscapes in the district.

Aleksandrovsky Forest is a natural monument covering 5,525 ha. Its history goes back to the Atamanskoye forestry, founded in 1884, which is now Aleksandrovsky Forest. Forest and history thus come together in a specific place: the forest is not only designated a natural monument but is also associated with a long local forestry history.

The «Kimmeriya» Nature Park adds another option, with canals, rivers and ponds, as well as landscaped areas for recreation and fishing. Its waterscape offers a different focus from the delta or Lake Pelenkino: several types of water bodies are part of the park’s landscape.

Walks, cycling and horseback rides

You can walk and cycle on the ecological trails of «Kimmeriya» Nature Park. The trails can be visited independently or accompanied by a park guide. The park is also in a technical opening and development phase. Check the current visitor arrangements before making plans.

Aleksandrovsky Forest also has purpose-built routes for walks and cycling. There is also a dedicated equestrian facility, from which horseback rides are organised. This means that different activities are available in the same forest: you can consider walking or cycling routes, or plan a horseback ride. Check the conditions in advance before scheduling a ride.

Coast, wine and history

Chumbur-Kosa Beach lies on the coast of the Sea of Azov and is suitable for family recreation, romantic walks and active leisure. The coast is therefore a holiday destination in its own right, alongside forest trails and park landscapes. For families who want to make time at the beach a priority, the explicitly mentioned family recreation is a useful point of reference.

The «Elbuzd» winery in Azov District offers guided tours and wine tastings by prior arrangement. Arrange a time with the winery in advance. This makes the visit a programme item that can be scheduled, while walks in the forest or along the coast offer other ways to spend your time.

The Museum of Cossack Studies, Ethnography and Culture of the Azov Coastal Region is located in Kagalnik. Its exhibition includes two illustrative settlement complexes: the Cossack hamlet of Donskoy and the village of Kagalnik, founded by Ukrainian peasants. The two examples offer different perspectives on the settlement history of the coastal region and make the museum a cultural complement to its natural and coastal attractions.

Choose a holiday apartment to suit your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide which experiences are important to you during your stay: the coast, activities in the forest, a museum visit or an appointment at the winery. These options involve different planning considerations; prior booking is required in particular for the winery tour, while you should check visitor arrangements for «Kimmeriya» Nature Park. This way, your choice reflects the holiday you have planned, without every day needing to follow the same theme.
