Jar: Discover Railway History and Culture
Accommodation in Jar
In Jar, railway and local history sit alongside an ecological nature trail outside the town. The Historical and Local History Museum traces the development of the transport network and features an ethnographic collection; the craft centre adds traditional clothing and tools. You can focus on history, everyday culture or outdoor activity, then decide whether Jar itself should be the main focus of your trip.
Railway History and Collections in Jar
The Jar Historical and Local History Museum opened in 1998 in connection with anniversaries for the railway station and the town: the station marked its 100th anniversary, and Jar its 60th. The exhibition “History of Jar Station. Transport Network” is devoted to the development of the railway and is described as the only exhibition of its kind in the republic. The tour leads from a railway bridge to a water tower. Its water was used for steam locomotives—a detail that vividly complements the town’s technical history.
The collection comprises about 5,000 objects and documents the history of the district from the late 19th century to the present. The ethnographic collection includes the life of the Northern Udmurts in Jar District. The museum also presents an exhibition on the life and work of Udmurt poet F. I. Vasilyev. Its subjects therefore range from transport and technology to regional everyday life and literary history.
The craft centre of Jar District offers another perspective on clothing and handicrafts. The exhibition “Grandmother’s Dowry” displays national aprons, skirts and dresses, alongside looms, old chests and spinning wheels. The selection makes textile work and related household items a distinct focus alongside the museum’s railway history.
A Nature Trail Outside the Town
Near Jar, the “Yarskaya” ecological nature trail runs outside the town. It is 2 km long. Along the route, there is an area where visitors can feed birds, as well as a workout area. The trail thus combines nature watching and exercise on a clearly defined route. When planning your stay in Jar, you can consider this outing as a counterpoint to the town’s exhibitions and historical themes.
More to Explore in the Udmurt Republic
The wider destination of the Udmurt Republic also offers cultural and landscape attractions in other places. In Votkinsk, the Pyotr Tchaikovsky Museum opened in 1940. The interior of a house from the mid-19th century has been reconstructed there; the collection includes historical furniture from the 18th to the 20th centuries, porcelain, postcards, paintings, books and the Wirth piano, on which the composer learned to play. The family’s history is also connected with Votkinsk: Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s family lived there from 1837 to 1848, eleven years in total, before moving to Moscow.
Those interested in historic architecture and rural daily life will find a different focus at the Ludorvai Museum Reserve. The ensemble comprises more than 20 buildings from the late 19th to the early 20th century and conveys the everyday life of Russians, Besermyans and Udmurts from the 19th to the early 20th century. A distinctive structure is the tent-shaped windmill: Fyodor Dragomirov built it in 1912; it comes from the Udmurt village of Chem-Kuyuk and is considered a valuable monument of wooden architecture.
Nature offers another distinct focus. Sharkan Nature Park lies between the Ita and Sharkan rivers and covers about 16,000 hectares. It is home to 507 species of higher plants, about half of the republic’s entire flora. At the Kokmansky Nature Reserve, free guided walks are offered on request from July to October; in winter, ski walks take place. Check the current arrangements before your trip.
When choosing a holiday rental, your preferred focus is a good starting point: should Jar, with its railway history, local history museum and nature trail, be at the centre of your trip, or would you also like to include museums and nature attractions in other parts of the Udmurt Republic? Base your search on the place that best suits your interests.
