Akhsau can be explored through two specific points of interest: historic architectural forms in the village and a hiking route that starts there. You can plan your stay around local history, hiking, or both.

Architectural Forms and History in Akhsau

The battle towers of the Telakurov, Buzoev and Tegaev families are located on the southwestern edge of Akhsau. They differ in form and construction from other towers in Mountain Digoria. The towers can be visited; check the specific visiting arrangements for your dates in advance. Their form and construction are key points of comparison for anyone interested in the architecture.

Another distinctive feature is the medieval Galuan of the Telokurov family: a residential building in the form of a castle. Here, a clearly defined residential function meets a castle-like architectural form. The Gor house of the Sakiev family is also a residential building, but dates from the 19th century. Comparing the two offers a glimpse of residential buildings from different periods: the Galuan is medieval, while the Gor house dates to the 19th century. They can be distinguished by family, function and period.

A semi-underground medieval crypt adds another type of structure to these buildings. It is neither a residential building nor a battle tower, but a crypt that is partly underground. Together, these buildings offer different ways to get to know Akhsau—not just through a single attraction, but through a range of historic architectural forms. If you are particularly interested in architecture, consider the form and function of each building as you explore.

Hiking from Akhsau

Akhsau is also a specific starting point for hikers: the hiking route to Bilagidon Waterfall begins in the village. This puts the historic buildings and a route leading to a waterfall side by side as different options for planning your trip. Before setting out, check visiting and access arrangements as well as current trail conditions.

Choosing the Right Base

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide on your priorities first: do you mainly want to explore Akhsau’s buildings, plan a hike to Bilagidon Waterfall, or combine both? Focus your search on Akhsau, and if you plan to visit other destinations, compare the specific location of your accommodation with your itinerary. This way, you can choose a base that suits the places and activities you actually want to include.

Regional Destinations in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania

The Dargavs Necropolis Complex offers a distinct cultural and historical point of interest in the wider destination of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania. It is located in the old village of Dargavs in the valley of the same name, 42 km from Vladikavkaz, and is a cultural monument of federal significance. The complex comprises 95 tomb structures of various types, dating from the 14th century to the first third of the 19th century. Since 1978, it has been a branch of the National Museum of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania. Its architecture and burial customs reflect the socioeconomic conditions and religious beliefs of the Ossetian population in the late Middle Ages. The necropolis complex thus offers a different perspective from the individual residential buildings, towers and crypt in Akhsau.

The circular route to Galdoridon Waterfall is a distinct hiking destination in the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania. It begins on the left terrace of the Khareseidon River and follows the start of the Khares Gorge to the waterfall. The route runs at an elevation of 1,800 to 2,200 m; conditions may vary by season. Galdoridon itself is a five-tiered waterfall more than 30 m high and a natural attraction in Alania National Park. These details give the regional excursion a different character from the Bilagidon route that starts in Akhsau, without presenting the two destinations as a single route.
