Morkinskiy District: Discover Nature and Mari Culture
Accommodation in Morkinskiy District
In Morkinskiy District, different ways of exploring lead through the landscape and Mari culture: around Yoshkar Ser, forest trails, streams and viewpoints take centre stage; in Shorunzha, an ethnocultural complex and traditional festivals offer insights into cultural themes. The geology of Karman-Kuryk and an annual mountain race are also among the varied experiences you can consider for your trip.
Forest Landscapes and Protected Nature
Yoshkar Ser lies in the northwestern part of Morkinskiy District, near the village of Nylkudo and about 23 kilometres from the town of Morki. The Mari name “Yoshkar Ser” means “Red Shore”. This regional natural monument, covering around 60 hectares, was established to preserve its landscape, geological deposits, water network, and rare plants and animals.
Paths and streams run along the wooded slope in the Yoshkar Ser area. Small clearings offer views of fields, meadows and surrounding villages. The ascent follows natural forest trails, allowing you to experience the landscape as a succession of forest, waterways and open viewpoints. Yoshkar Ser is particularly worth considering when choosing your excursions if you want to explore nature and terrain.
The Kamennaya Gora complex nature reserve extends across Morkinskiy District and Kuschenerskiy District. It is another example of a natural area that spans more than one district.
Karman-Kuryk: Geology and Educational Trail
Karman-Kuryk lies near Abdaevo and rises to 224.2 metres above sea level. The mountain is a low-mountain formation of the Vyatka-Mari Ridge. Dolomite, limestone, marl, clay and sandstone are exposed on its large northern and eastern slopes. Karst features are also found in this terrain; caves were once present there. Karman-Kuryk was declared a state natural monument in 1976.
An ecological educational trail has also been developed at Karman-Kuryk. Scientists and students from MarSU and MarSTU helped design it for scientific and educational work. Its 15 stations cover biology and ecology. If you would like to include the trail in your plans, check visiting arrangements in advance.
Another opportunity for an active outing is Chukshinskaya Mountain, where an annual mountain race is held for adults and children. If you want to include the race in your trip plans, check the date for the year you plan to visit.
Mari Culture in Shorunzha and Chavainur
Shorunzha, also known as Uncho, is one of the old settlements of Morkinskiy District. A sacred memorial stone to Onar stands in the village. Founded in 2015, the ethnocultural complex includes a creative workshop and the “Old Mari Estate” museum and ethnographic complex. The manor house serves both as a museum and for practical purposes. Shorunzha thus brings different forms of cultural interpretation together in one place.
Ritual festivals and events are held at the ethnocultural complex, including Shorykyol, Üarnya, Kugeche, Agavairem, Semyk and Sÿrem. If a particular celebration is important to your trip, check the dates before making plans. Ethnofolklore tourist routes also lead to places associated with traditional folk art, folklore, customs, oral traditions and songs in Shorunzha, Kutyuk-Kiner, Chavainur and Chodrayal.
In Chavainur, the Sergey Grigoryevich Chavain Memorial House Museum is dedicated to Sergey Grigoryevich Chavain. Its halls contain more than 1,000 exhibits: collections relating to Chavain’s life, items from the everyday life and culture of the Mari people, books and paintings. The district’s cultural attractions therefore offer different experiences: alongside festivals and folklore, the museum provides a look at an extensive collection.
