Suksun District: Samovars, History and Nature
Accommodation in Suksun District
Suksun District offers a variety of travel themes, from samovar traditions and local history to nature experiences. At the heart of the district is Suksun: an unusual monument, a historic church, and an exhibition tell the story of the town. The pond, forest, and waterfall around Suksun and elsewhere in the district offer more to discover.
Suksun: Samovars, a Pond, and Architectural History
A samovar monument stands in Linden Park in the center of Suksun. It is described as the only one of its kind in Russia and stands 3 meters and 20 centimeters tall. The large samovar points to a tradition also explored in the “Chaynaya” exhibition, which presents tea-drinking traditions in Suksun and opened in 2017.
Another historic landmark is the Church of Peter and Paul. Built in 1729–1730, it is an architectural monument. Suksun Pond is also part of the town’s history: it was created in 1727, at the same time as the founding of the Suksun Copper Smelting Works. The monument, church, and pond each offer a different perspective—from the samovar as a distinctive symbol to religious architecture and early industrial history.
Forests, Waterfalls, and Routes in the District
Pine forest surrounds Suksun to the east, south, and southwest, making it suitable for walks. The “Plakun” waterfall, on the left bank of the Sylva near the village of Sasykovo, offers a different natural setting. It is a natural monument of regional significance: two springs converge on a steep slope and plunge seven meters onto a rocky shore.
A 2020 municipal description mentions the 220-kilometer “Chaynye stolitsy Urala” tourist route, which passes through Suksunsky Municipal District. Museum specialists have also developed excursion and walking routes to the district’s natural and historic attractions. At district level, there are both longer routes and walks around Suksun to choose from; check current conditions before planning a specific route.
Exhibitions and Museum Visits
The local history museum in Suksunsky District was founded in 1977. With its focus on tea-drinking traditions, the “Chaynaya” exhibition ties in with a theme also reflected in the samovar monument. New exhibitions are on the first floor of the building of the main office of the Demidov Works Administration, at 2 Kolkhoznaya Street in Suksun. A museum website from 2023 also lists the “Suksunskiy samovar” guided tour.
Advance booking is required for museum tours on weekends and public holidays. Check in advance whether you can arrange a time for your visit. This lets you include the exhibition and samovar theme in your plans without having to commit to a set visit time.
Things to Do in the Wider Perm Region
The wider travel destination of the Perm Region also offers its own nature and culture experiences. The Basegi Nature Reserve has an excursion route called “To the Summit of Northern Baseg.” The circuit is 11 kilometers long and takes 5 to 8 hours, including the guided tour and time to rest. The season runs from June to October. The route starts at the checkpoint by the Schastlivy ranger station and continues on foot for 3,700 meters through taiga forest—the mountain forest zone—and for about 300 meters across mountain meadows. The reserve also has a route called “To Southern Baseg.” Check current arrangements with the reserve before planning a trip.
The Basegi Nature Reserve visitor center has a small museum exhibition on the flora and fauna of the Perm Region. Environmental education sessions, lectures, quizzes, and games featuring films or multimedia presentations are held there regularly. For a different kind of outing, there is Khokhlovka, known as the Urals’ first open-air architectural and ethnographic museum of wooden architecture. The year-round Gubakha resort is located on Mount Krestovaya in the city of Gubakha. It lists seven groomed pistes and eleven slopes for freeriders; check the latest information before making specific plans.
