In Pechorsky District, Seto culture meets a variety of stone-built heritage. A particularly vivid introduction is the Seto Farmstead Museum in the village of Sigovo: its collection brings together household items, crafts and clothing with a history that is also visible in the district’s fortresses, monastery ruins and village churches.

Seto Culture and Daily Life in Sigovo

The Seto Farmstead Museum preserves the material and spiritual culture of the Seto people. It is housed in the authentic Küläots family farmstead, which took shape from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The collection includes household items and work tools, including a large loom and a horse-powered flax breaker. Women’s clothing, so-called “God’s cloths,” and a wooden statue of the pagan god Peko round out the collection. Concrete items from household and craft life are thus displayed alongside textiles and objects shaped by religion. This makes a museum visit especially interesting if you are looking not only for buildings but also for traditional ways of life.

Visitors can sample Seto cuisine at the museum and learn how to prepare it. This combines exploring the local culture with food and hands-on participation; check the programme’s current availability before your trip. The museum also hosts the international ethnocultural festival “Setomaa. Family Reunion” every year on 28 August. If you would like to plan your visit around this date, check that year’s programme.

Guided Tours and Stone Heritage

On the grounds of the Pskov-Pechory Monastery of the Holy Dormition, guided tours are available daily from 9 am to 5 pm by prior arrangement. Check the details before travelling. Booking in advance is an important part of planning your visit: this is a guided tour, not simply an indication that access is available at any time.

The district’s architectural history can also be seen beyond the museum, in a variety of forms. The stone fortresses of Izborsk and Pechory have been preserved here. The ruins of Malsky Monastery offer another point of interest, while old churches in the villages of Senno, Tailovo and Kolpino are considered preserved architectural monuments. You can choose among these sites according to your interests: fortifications, monastic history or village churches each offer a different focus. No claim is made here about access to the interiors of the churches.
