Luka: Memorial Cross at the Site of the Tragedy
Accommodation in Luka
Luka connects a specific village story with a memorial site: a cross stands at the site of the tragedy in memory of the victims of the fire at the Oksotchi psychoneurological boarding school. The nature and culture of the wider destination of Novgorod Oblast offer another perspective on the trip.
Memorial Site in Luka
The memorial cross was consecrated in 2013. A 2015 report placed it at the site of the boarding school’s wooden building, which had burned down; according to the report, 37 people had died in the fire about a year and a half earlier. A memorial plaque at the site bears the names of the deceased. A 2015 report also mentions a fire-alarm rail bell beside the path near the memorial cross.
Landscape in the Wider Destination of Novgorod Oblast
Valdai National Park covers 159,100 hectares and stretches across the Valdaysky, Demyansky, and Okulovsky districts of Novgorod Oblast. Mount Ryzhokha is the park’s highest point. A 25-metre-high observation tower stands on it, offering views of the taiga, Lake Velyo, and other bodies of water. In the Bor area, a circular trail leads through typical taiga forests on hilly terrain and through diverse wetlands in the hollows between the hills.
The tower and the trail offer different perspectives: from the tower, the view extends across the landscape, while the trail passes through forest and wetlands. Together, they reveal the nature of Novgorod Oblast from two angles—as a panorama and as a succession of different types of landscape.
Bells and City History in the Wider Destination of Novgorod Oblast
In Valday, the Bell Museum Centre displays bells from around the world, with examples ranging from the 3rd century BC through the Middle Ages to modern souvenir bells. According to the tourist information, it is the only museum in Russia to bring together bells from around the world. Staff demonstrate bell-ringing techniques, which visitors can try themselves. This adds a hands-on experience to the collection: visitors not only see the bells but also learn how they are rung.
An exhibition that opened in 1998 at the Museum of the County Town covers the everyday lives of town residents, the development of local trades, and the lives of individual Valday families and well-known summer visitors. In 2017, the monument “Kuznetsam i kolokolnym masteram Valdaya” was also erected in Valday. While the bell collection spans a broad period of time, the exhibition and monument focus on different aspects of the town’s history and craftsmanship.
