Gayskiy District lies entirely within the steppe zone. Its landscape is defined not only by open steppe, but also by distinctive rock formations and deeply cut canyons. For a trip focused on the landscape and local wildlife and plant life, specific natural sites take centre stage: Aulganskoye Ushchelye, the Brontozavr rock ridge and Gora Poperechnaya. One stage of the «Guberlinskiye skazki» hiking route also passes through Gayskiy District.

Steppe landscape, canyon and rocky ridge

Gora Poperechnaya is listed among the natural monuments of Gayskiy District. It lies 1.5 kilometres northeast of the mouth of the Guberlya River. Aulganskoye Ushchelye (Akry-Sagylskoye) has a different kind of terrain: the canyon extends for more than a kilometre along the Aulgan stream and lies 1 to 2 kilometres east of the village of Ishkinino.

Aulganskoye Ushchelye provides a habitat for diverse rock-dwelling and mesophilic vegetation. Foxes, badgers, steppe pikas, stoats and steppe polecats live there. Birds are also part of the canyon’s character: steppe falcons, wood pigeons, partridges and numerous small passerine birds nest there.

Geologists also call the Brontozavr rock ridge «Dinozavr». It rises on the left bank of the Kizentashka stream, 2.5 kilometres southeast of the village of Repina. Its rocky crest, about 500 metres long, resembles a ruined wall up close and the back of a giant lizard from a distance. The contrast between these two views makes the rock’s shape particularly vivid.

A hiking stage in Gayskiy District

On the fourth day of the «Guberlinskiye skazki» route, the hike leads from Kazachya Guberlya to Urochishche Chertovo Gorodishche and then continues to the village of Khmelevka. This gives you a specific opportunity to experience the district on foot. Check local conditions for completing this stage before setting out.

More nature experiences in Orenburg Oblast

Orenburg Oblast also has natural destinations in their own right. The 650-metre «Dykhanie stepi» educational trail runs through the «Predural'skaya step'» section of the «Orenburgskiy» nature reserve. It leads to the Przewalski’s horse reintroduction centre. Visitors walk in a group with a reserve staff member as their guide and can see, photograph or film the horses at close range in acclimatisation enclosures. Visitor information is seasonal; check the latest details before planning your visit.

Another family outing in Orenburg Oblast is to Tsar-Bor Ecopark. Its one-kilometre «Tsaritsa-Sosna» ecological trail is designed for the whole family. There are also four educational and play areas for children of different ages. These attractions offer a different focus from the canyons and rock formations of Gayskiy District and may be worth considering when planning a broader nature trip.

Choose the right focus for your trip

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first decide how much you want to cover on your trip: would you like to focus on the rocky and canyon landscapes and the hiking stage in Gayskiy District, or include other natural destinations in Orenburg Oblast?
