The Bairovsky State Zoological Nature Reserve is located in the northern forest-steppe and includes lakes, wetlands, and scattered woodland. It extends across the Sargatsky, Tyukalinsky, and Kolosovsky districts of Omsk Oblast. The combination of open wetlands and scattered woodland offers a different focus from a trip devoted entirely to urban history.

Landscape and orientation

The reserve was established in 1959. Moose migration routes from the northern areas to the southern areas pass through the Bairovsky Reserve. This means that, alongside individual bodies of water, the focus also falls on a larger protected area and its ecological connections. The landscape therefore offers a tangible connection with nature for anyone who does not want to plan their trip solely around urban attractions.

The road network also provides a regional point of reference: according to the 2025 district profile, the federal Omsk–Tyumen R-402 highway runs for 72 kilometers through Tyukalinsky District. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is worth comparing this location with the places you want to focus on during your trip.

Culture and experiences in Omsk Oblast

Within the wider destination of Omsk Oblast, Tyukalinsk adds an urban-historical perspective. The town was founded in 1759 as a postal station on the Siberian Tract and is considered an open-air museum town. Two museum buildings also tell the story of the town through their former uses: the Uyezdny Gorod local history museum is housed in a former two-class municipal school building. The Museum of the Military Pages of Tyukalinsk’s History is located in a former barracks for the guards at the transit prison.

The one-day weekend route “Uyezdny Gorod on the Siberian Tract” includes a town tour, interactive insights into the occupations of Tyukalinsk residents in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the merchants’ tea event “Tea Drinking, Merchant Style.” The interactive program “Evening Gathering at the Afonin Merchants’” offers a different focus, with Russian folk games, round dances, and entertainment. Those interested in the history of merchant life can explore it through these programs in a way that goes beyond simply viewing museum buildings.

The “Tyukalinsk—Merchant Town” route includes a visit to the Museum of the Military Pages of Tyukalinsk’s History. It also features a screening in a makeshift cinema: tourists take part in a feature film in the style of silent black-and-white cinema. Confirm the route’s booking and availability before planning.

Another example from the wider destination of Omsk Oblast is the Starina Sibirskaya Museum-Reserve in Bolsheretchye. It brings together a historical and architectural complex, a local history museum, an art gallery, and the Batakovo National Archaeological and Nature Park. The open-air museum includes 15 historical and architectural monuments and notable sites. Visitor activities include guided tours and games and entertainment programs, as well as participation in reconstructed traditional customs and folklore and ethnographic festivals associated with the folk calendar.

Lake Ebeity also showcases the range of experiences in Omsk Oblast: it is the region’s largest salt lake, was declared a water natural monument in 1979, and has large deposits of therapeutic mud. A one-kilometer ecological tourism trail runs along the lake from the village of Gvozdyevka. Information boards cover the lake, the properties of its water and brine, and seven legends about its formation; a salt crystal was chosen as the lake’s symbol.
