Between a body of water with a large seagull colony, traditional crafts and historic museums, Gorodetsky District offers a range of travel experiences. When choosing a vacation rental, you can first decide whether hands-on activities in Gorodets, architectural and museum history, or regional nature are your priority.

Nature and protected areas

A body of water formed at Smolki in an excavated peat bog. It covers 17 hectares, and the protected zone encompasses 25 hectares. The area is one of the protected areas in Gorodetsky District and serves as a breeding ground for rare bird species in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. It is also a colony breeding site for around 1,500 pairs of seagulls. The “Nikola-Klyuch Spring” protected area offers a different focus; it was established at district level in 2009. The spring lies on the southeastern edge of Beloglazovo. It has been known since the 17th century, with the first references dating back to 1623.

Crafts and history in Gorodets

At the “Gorod masterov” (“City of Masters”) museum and tourism complex, historical themes and hands-on crafts come together. Built in 2009, the complex presents history from various eras, including Russian princes, the merchant class, crafts and shipbuilding. Visitors can take part in making traditional handicrafts—from Gorodets painting and Old Russian painting to pottery, Zhbannikov whistles, wood carving, gold embroidery and textile work. Historical themes and the opportunity to try a craft for yourself are part of the same visit.

The Gorodets Wall adds a walkable historic site to the area’s cultural history. It is a well-preserved section of a significant feat of Russian military engineering from the 12th to 13th centuries. Visitors can climb up the approximately one-and-a-half-kilometer eastern section and walk along a path between 200-year-old pine trees. The options therefore range from taking part in a craft to walking along a historic structure.

Museums and special experiences

The museums in Gorodets also offer different ways to explore history and everyday culture. At the “House of Countess Panina,” visitors can see a library of handwritten and early printed books; Russian costumes are also available to borrow for photos. If you plan to visit, check current availability in advance. The “Terem of the Russian Samovar” displays a samovar collection said to be one of the largest in the world. At the “Gorodets on the Volga” museum, visitors can try the work of a burlak: they put on a harness and sing the song “Dubinushka” (roughly, “Little Club”). Before your trip, also check whether this program is available.

Cheese, route and choosing where to stay

The “Kurtsevo” cheese factory is located in the village of the same name in Gorodetsky District. More than 20 types of cheese are made there and can be sampled at a tasting. If you plan to attend a tasting, check current availability before your trip. A tourist route in the Gorky Reservoir area runs through Gorodets, Fedurino and Sobolicha to springs. Check the current signage and route conditions in advance.

Gorodets is the point of reference for several of the cultural and craft activities mentioned; the cheese factory in Kurtsevo, the spring near Beloglazovo and the protected area near Smolki are located elsewhere. If you are looking for a vacation rental, make your choice according to which of these experiences matters most for your trip.
