Arzamas combines a central city park with churches built in different periods and an art school founded here in 1802. This means you can shape your stay around different themes: the park and arboretum, the city’s history and art, or sacred architecture. When choosing a holiday apartment in Arzamas, you can consider which of these aspects of the city matters most for your trip.

Gaidar Park: Green Space and Recreation

Gaidar Park is in the center of Arzamas. Established in 1957, it is named after children’s writer Arkady Gaidar. An arboretum established in 1949 occupies one third of the park. A local report from 2021 mentions Nordic walking and cycling paths. Together, the park and arboretum offer green space and active routes in the city center.

A report on the park’s renovation from the same year also lists a community center, a building for renting sports equipment, the art installation “Zvezda Gaidara,” and a stage with an amphitheater. Alongside the paths, these features offer a range of attractions: an arboretum and recreation, an art installation and an event space. For planning your holiday, the park offers a focus of its own alongside the city’s churches and museums.

Art School and Museum in a Historic Church Building

The Arzamas Historical and Art Museum is housed in the former building of Ilyinskaya Church, an 18th-century architectural monument. The stone, tiered church, with a refectory and altar, was built in 1746 in the Russian Baroque style. Its upper floors and bell tower have not survived. The historic building thus connects the museum’s present-day address with a clearly discernible history of its construction.

The museum’s gallery is devoted to the history of Russia’s first private art school, founded in Arzamas in 1802 by Academician A. V. Stupin. The first floor houses a historical exhibition on key stages in the development of the city and district; the second floor contains an art gallery with works by students of Stupin’s school, Russia’s first provincial art school. This gives visitors two distinct ways to explore the city’s history and art within the same museum. Exhibition details may change; check the current displays before visiting.

Churches from Different Centuries

Built in 1638, the Transfiguration Cathedral is considered the oldest and first stone church in Arzamas. The Resurrection Cathedral was built later, between 1814 and 1842, to a design by M. P. Korinfsky. Its five domes and 48 columns define the building, which is the architectural focal point of Cathedral Square. The time between the two churches makes different periods of sacred architecture in Arzamas visible.

The interiors and furnishings also have their own distinctive features. The Resurrection Cathedral houses the Holy Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, with an intricately carved crucifix; it is considered the most venerated relic among the holy, wonderworking icons of Arzamas. The Church of the Nativity of Christ has five domes topped with gilded crosses. Its ornate iconostasis was made by carvers from Arzamas. Visitors who look beyond the churches’ dates of construction will also find distinct religious and artistic features.

A Glimpse of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

The Museum of the Russian Patriarchate in Arzamas also forms part of the wider cultural landscape of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Its exhibition focuses on the lives and work of Patriarchs Nikon and Sergius, as well as Alexius I, Pimen, Alexius II and Kirill. It displays original objects belonging to the patriarchs and modern reconstructions. An overview tour covers the history of the Russian Patriarchate from its beginnings to the present day and offers insights into the lives and spiritual development of the patriarchs. This theme complements local city and art history with a distinct perspective on the history of the Patriarchate.
