Discover Taldom through the tangible traces of its shoemaking craft, as well as its art and history. Museum collections, a gallery, and the Church of the Archangel Michael offer different starting points for a visit. This lets you tailor your cultural itinerary to your interests, from the former production and trade of shoes to painting, porcelain, and religious objects.

Shoemaking and the History of the Town

In the late 19th century, Taldom was a center of shoemaking. Shoe production became an important local livelihood, while the town was also a center of the shoe trade. Merchants came from all over Russia to buy goods at the weekly fairs. Craft and trade thus reveal two sides of the town’s history: making shoes and exchanging them in the markets.

At the Taldom Historical and Literary Museum, you can explore the subject through specific exhibits. The museum holds around 17,000 items, including documents, old photographs, shoes from Taldom, and religious objects. The shoes bring the former craft to life, while the documents and photographs offer further historical perspectives. A special exhibition, «Beloye zoloto Severnogo Podmoskovya», focuses on porcelain production and introduces another aspect of manufacturing.

The museum is housed in a building commissioned by first-guild merchant Dmitry Volkov in the late 19th to early 20th century. The construction period partly overlaps with the time when Taldom was a center of shoemaking. So a visit to the museum is about more than its collection: the building’s commissioner and the period in which it was built also offer a tangible historical connection.

The Church of the Archangel Michael in Taldom offers a much earlier historical point of reference. It was consecrated in June 1808, and its parish is active. This date is far earlier than the shoemaking and shoe-trading tradition that flourished in the late 19th century, broadening the historical perspective on the town.

Painting, Creative Activities, and a Museum Excursion

The «Svet vokrug» art gallery offers a different cultural focus: its permanent exhibition features paintings by Russian artists. The gallery also has a small lecture hall with seating for 24 and a bright studio for workshops or courses in various creative fields. The lecture hall can host talks, presentations, and creative evenings. The exhibition, possible events, and studio offer different ways to engage with art and culture—from looking and listening to doing creative work yourself.

The museum excursion «Kozhevennykh del mastera» offers a hands-on connection to the shoemaking tradition. It covers shoe materials, bast shoes, and leatherworking, as well as how to tell genuine from artificial leather. At the end, participants can make a bracelet from leather beads. The museum excursion must be booked in advance.

When choosing your holiday apartment in Taldom, your preferred focus can be a helpful guide: first consider whether you would like to center your stay more on the history of shoemaking or on painting and creative cultural activities.
