Shikhovo stands out for the contrast between a craft tradition that has continued to this day and a cycling route that passes through the village. Stringed-instrument making has a specific local connection, while the “Lutsinskiy Rodnik” route also takes in the surrounding area. Two distinct themes therefore sit side by side: the history of a craft and a longer cycling tour.

Stringed instruments: a craft with a history

Stringed-instrument making began in Shikhovo in the first half of the 19th century as a cottage industry among peasant families. Its origins therefore lie in a skill first practiced in the home. Instruments from Shikhovo also found a place in the music of large ensembles: soloists from the Alexandrov Ensemble, the N. P. Osipov Russian Folk Instruments Orchestra and the Pyatnitsky Choir played them. This connection between local production and music gives the craft tradition a cultural dimension that extends beyond the village.

The tradition did not end with the factory: after it was destroyed in 2007, home-based artisans from Shikhovo continued the craft of their ancestors. Today, stringed instruments are made only in the village. Both the peasant cottage industry and the passing on of the craft after the setback of 2007 are therefore part of Shikhovo’s history.

Another historical connection reaches further back: from the 15th to the 18th century, Shikhovo was part of the estate of the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery. This period is clearly distinct from the history of stringed-instrument making, which began only in the first half of the 19th century. Those interested in historical connections will therefore find two separate points of interest here.

Cycling through Shikhovo

The “Lutsinskiy Rodnik” cycling route passes through Shikhovo and forms part of a longer route. The described route starts in Verkhny Posad in Zvenigorod, crosses a field and passes through Shikhovo to Lucino, then continues to the entrance to the Biological Station of Moscow State University. Shikhovo is therefore along the way; the tour extends beyond the village and does not end there.

The route is about 20 kilometres long. According to the route description, it takes two to three hours and does not require any special physical preparation. This time estimate can help you plan your day; check local conditions before setting out. The distance and duration convey different aspects of the tour: the kilometres describe its length, while the stated time indicates the approximate effort involved.

The route description includes, in the wider surrounding area, forests, hills, fields and the Moskva River. It also mentions old houses, trains moving slowly across the river and sunset views of the opposite bank. The route therefore offers a changing mix of landscapes, village scenes and river views. These impressions relate to the described route, not only to the section through Shikhovo.

Which trip suits your interests?

The two themes can offer different points of reference when choosing a destination and a holiday rental. If you are particularly interested in craftsmanship and cultural history, Shikhovo has a specific local connection: instrument making began as a cottage industry and continues in the village to this day. If you would like to include a cycling tour in your trip, the route, about 20 kilometres long, passes through the village and continues to Lucino. The stated two to three hours give you an approximate time frame.

The two themes can therefore be considered separately: the craft tradition tells the story of a local development, while the cycling route places Shikhovo within a longer itinerary. Which aspect matters more to your plans depends on whether you mainly want to explore the area’s cultural history or set aside time for the tour.
