Landscape and Estate History

Sennitsy Estate brings together a distinctive history and a preserved landscape. The estate is now almost entirely destroyed; however, its original landscape and distinctive plantings have survived. A cascade of ponds and numerous paths—some secluded, others open—define the grounds. They are ideal for leisurely walks, taking in the surrounding landscape, and photo shoots. Photography enthusiasts can explore the ponds, paths, and plantings as different subjects; those who mainly want to spend time outdoors can make walking the focus of their visit.

The architectural history also reflects different periods. The stone Church of the Ascension was built in 1709 in the Naryshkin Baroque style, replacing an earlier wooden church. A two-story manager’s house dates from the late 18th century; the eclectic horse yard was built at the turn of the 20th century. The surviving structures also include the ruins of the power plant and the orangery-mausoleum. The church, manager’s house, and horse yard represent different building types and construction periods. The contrast between surviving buildings and ruins makes clear that the estate is no longer a fully intact ensemble. It is the combination of building remains, ponds, paths, and plantings that gives the place its distinctive character.

Sculpture at the Workshop Museum

The workshop museum of Nikolai Abakumtsev offers a different cultural perspective. It comprises an exhibition hall, working studios, and an open-air exhibition. These three areas each have a different focus: indoor displays, the workshop, and outdoor exhibits sit side by side. The monumental sculpture «Volya» stands in the courtyard. The museum thus combines several forms of exhibition with a striking outdoor work.

Nikolai Abakumtsev was a Soviet sculptor, painter, and graphic artist; he created more than a hundred sculpted portraits and figures of Lenin. His artistic work therefore cannot be reduced to a single discipline, although his many sculptures make up a clear focus. Outside the museum, he contributed to the design of the «Druzhba narodov» fountain at VDNKh. He was one of several designers of the fountain.

What to Focus on During Your Visit

Sennitsy Estate and the workshop museum offer different experiences: the estate focuses on the landscape, historic buildings, and their current condition; the museum centers on the work of a single artist and different forms of exhibition. Consider whether you would rather focus on nature and architectural history or on sculpture. These interests can also guide your search for a holiday apartment: the first thing to consider is which theme you want to shape your stay.

A visit to the estate grounds includes a guided tour lasting 1.5 to 2 hours. If you plan to take the tour, check the current arrangements before your visit.
