In Kovylkino, religious history, art and military technology offer different themes for a stay. If you are weighing up different interests for a shared trip, this contrast can help you choose where to go: the highlights range from a temple to a collection in the local history museum and military exhibits. The nature and educational attractions of the wider destination, the Republic of Mordovia, form a separate regional theme.

Cultural history and collections

The first temple built in Kovylkino in the post-Soviet era was dedicated to Saint Seraphim of Sarov in 1993. Its construction date and dedication provide two specific points of interest: the city’s recent history and the veneration of a named saint.

Another cultural legacy is preserved at the Kovylkino Local History Museum, where more than 60 sculptures donated to the local community are kept. The number gives a sense of the scale of the donation, while the dedication also points to its connection with the community. This gives the art theme an explicitly local dimension alongside the temple’s religious history.

Military technology and remembrance

Military exhibits in Kovylkino include a MiG-15 fighter aircraft, the 2K11 Krug surface-to-air missile system, the Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft gun and the 2K22 Tunguska gun-missile system. Military exhibits are displayed at the memorials to the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War and to veterans of the war in Afghanistan. The technology therefore forms a distinct highlight that is also connected with remembrance. This sets it apart from the donated collection at the local history museum and the temple’s religious history.

Nature and educational attractions in the Republic of Mordovia

In the Mordovian Nature Reserve, the “Discover the Mordovian Nature Reserve!” educational trail is located near the central administration in Pushhta. Visitors can learn about typical local flora and fauna, as well as animals and ecosystems in the reserve’s waters. Visitor regulations require a special permit to use the educational trail.

The nature reserve’s natural history museum also focuses on education: At year-round guided tours for groups and individuals, you can interactively listen to animal and bird calls; advance booking is required for these museum tours. Remember to book your tour in advance. This offers two distinct experiences: an educational trail focused on nature and a museum visit with an interactive, audio-based approach.

Founded on March 7, 1995, Smolny National Park protects particularly valuable natural areas in the coniferous and deciduous mixed-forest zone of the Republic of Mordovia. In its southern part, the forest and the adjoining Alatyr River floodplain form a bird area of global importance. This connects the forest with the special importance of the river floodplain for birdlife.

The 1.5 km “Forest Work” ecological trail passes through pine and deciduous woodland and offers information about forest protection and reforestation. It is accessible only during the warmer months. Other trails focus on different activities: the “Lesnoy Trial” tourist trail in Smolny National Park is equipped for cycling and skiing. The “Phenology of the Russian Forest” route is for cycling, skiing and hiking, and introduces visitors to seasonal changes in the development of plants and animals.

The MASTOR trail (“Turisticheskie tropy izucheniya miroustroystva i dolgoletiya”) has also been created in Parakino. It comprises three ethnographic educational trails through the scenic surroundings of the old Mordvin village of Parakino and is designed for use in all seasons. Along the trails are rest areas with gazebos, equipped picnic spots, spaces for traditional Mordvin games, swings and art installations in the natural landscape. As specific facilities may change, check what is available before your visit.

When looking for a holiday apartment, the main focus of your trip is a good place to start: Kovylkino offers opportunities to explore cultural and technological history.
