Yukki combines an ecological nature trail in the forest with the SK “Yukki” ski and leisure park—two very different reasons to explore the area. The nature trail starts at Lake Tohkolodskoye in a wooded area in the village of Yukki; the park has ski slopes and snow tubing runs. When choosing your holiday rental and planning your days there, you can first consider whether forest trails and nature or winter sports are your priority. The two attractions showcase different sides of the destination.

The Yukkovskiye Kamy Nature Trail

The Yukkovskiye Kamy Ecological Nature Trail is ten kilometres long and has three routes: Ozernaya alleya, Kamovye kholmy and Tropa Yukki. Its starting point at Lake Tohkolodskoye provides a clear landmark for orientation: the lake is in the wooded area in the village of Yukki. The total length and route names show two different aspects of the trail—its scale and its layout. This makes the idea of a walk more concrete than a general notion of a stroll in the forest.

The trail follows historic forest paths that were used for walks. The history of the paths is therefore part of their character, alongside the division into three routes. In the immediate area around the destination, the trail passes through hilly coniferous forest landscapes with elevation changes of up to ten metres. Along the way, there are rest areas, signposts and interactive information boards about the area’s flora and fauna. These details add to the route information: signposts help with orientation, the boards draw attention to nature topics, and rest areas offer a chance to take a break. As seasonal conditions can affect hiking, take the time of year into account when planning your day.

Skiing and Snow Tubing in Yukki

The SK “Yukki” ski and leisure park in Yukki has four ski slopes and three snow tubing runs equipped with a special lift. This brings together different winter sports: skiing on the slopes and snow tubing on the runs. When planning, you can therefore take into account not only the number of facilities but also the activity you want to try. Check the park’s current operating status before visiting.

Nature and Culture in Leningrad Oblast

Those who look at Yukki in the context of the wider destination of Leningrad Oblast will find other distinct nature and culture topics there. In the far east of Leningrad Oblast lies the Vepssky Forest Nature Park, which includes seven reserves with particularly strict protection regulations. The park has numerous lakes; the largest is Lake Lerinskoye, in the reserve of the same name. Other notable features include well-preserved old spruce and pine forests in the “Vepssky les” and “Ashchozyorsky” reserves. These forests are important to numerous organisms that can survive only in forests undisturbed by economic activity.

Wildlife also defines the nature park: brown bears are found there in larger numbers, and the wolverine, which is extremely rare in the region, has also been recorded. Wildlife sightings cannot be planned with certainty. The Veps, a small people of Russia with their own culture and traditions, have traditionally lived in the park.

Another cultural heritage site in Leningrad Oblast is Koporye Fortress. It is a museum and a monument of ancient Russian stone architecture. Its present form has been preserved since the 16th century; parts of the masonry date back to the 13th century. The fortress can be visited without a guide using the “Koporskaya krepost 2.0” multimedia guide; check its availability when planning your visit. Climbing the walls and towers is prohibited because they are in an emergency condition.
