In Zheleznogorsk, a large natural and recreational area meets the history of a comparatively young city. N. A. Nikitin Park combines walking paths with a boat station, rides and a summer theatre. There is also a city history museum and a centrally located arboretum. This lets you choose different focuses when planning your trip: green spaces, urban history or a museum visit.

Parks and green spaces

N. A. Nikitin Park has walking paths, a boat station, rides and a summer theatre. These varied attractions give you more than one reason to visit the park.

In 2023, the park became a specially protected natural area. Its two sections lie on the left and right banks of the Pogarshchina River valley, near Zheleznogorsk’s urban reservoir. The natural and recreational area covers a total of 165.43 hectares. Alongside its leisure facilities, the park therefore also has a clearly defined landscape dimension.

Another place to enjoy greenery in the city is the Zheleznogorsk Arboretum in the city centre. The park and arboretum offer different ways to explore green spaces during your stay, alongside the city’s other attractions.

Explore the city’s history and mining heritage

The first houses in Zheleznogorsk were built on a buckwheat field starting in October 1957. Five years later, the workers’ settlement at the Mikhailovsky open-pit mine was granted city status. These two milestones tell the story of the town’s early development, from the start of construction to its transition from a workers’ settlement to a city.

The memory of ore mining is also present in several places. The monument commemorating the first ore extraction in Zheleznogorsk was renovated using a 47-tonne stone; the renovated monument opened in June 2000. The city history museum also has a diorama of the Mikhailovsky iron ore open-pit mine. The subject is thus presented in two different forms: as a monument and as a museum exhibit.

More to explore in the wider destination of Kursk Oblast

The wider destination of Kursk Oblast also offers distinctive cultural and natural attractions. At the A. A. Fet Estate, the museum was established in 2010 as a branch of the Kursk Regional Museum of Local Lore. The “Nightingale Night” event takes place there every year in late May, and the Fet Readings in early July. If you would like to attend one of these events, check the latest dates.

The Central Black Earth Biosphere Reserve has been part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 1978. The “Streltsenskaya Steppe” and “Protected Oak Forest” ecological trails run through the reserve, and a natural history museum explores its history, climate, soils, plants and animals. The reserve can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Contact the reserve before your trip to make arrangements.

In Krasnikovo, a watermill built without a single nail stands as an example of wooden architecture. It is a regionally significant cultural heritage site and is managed by the Kursk Regional Museum of Local Lore. Historically, the mill used two millstones to grind grain into flour and groats. The Watermill Museum explores its history and technical features, as well as the miller’s daily work.
