Kurgan: Art, City History and the Decembrists
Accommodation in Kurgan
Kurgan invites you to discover Russian art, the city’s history and the legacy of the Decembrists. The museums offer a wide-ranging look at everything from icon painting and handicrafts to documents about the postal service, the fire brigade and railway construction. Historical tours and routes through the city centre complement these themes. The places that interest you most may also influence your choice of holiday apartment and preferred location in Kurgan.
Art and the History of the Decembrists
The permanent exhibition at the Kurgan State Art Museum features Russian art from the 20th and early 21st centuries, Russian handicrafts and the handicrafts of the Trans-Urals, as well as icon painting. It brings together different forms of expression: fine art, applied crafts and religious painting.
The Decembrists’ House Museum focuses on several chapters of Russian history. Its eight exhibition halls cover the Patriotic War of 1812, the Decembrist movement, and the lives, daily routines and activities of the state criminals exiled to Siberia. The collection comprises more than 800 authentic exhibits, including the Decembrists’ personal belongings, historical documents and objects from the 19th century. The exhibition thus brings political history together with glimpses into everyday life.
Another link to literature and history is the W. K. Küchelbecker House Museum. It is dedicated to the Decembrist poet W. K. Küchelbecker, a friend of Pushkin. The house of the Decembrist Naryshkin is also among Kurgan’s historic sites: it is classified as a cultural heritage site of federal significance.
City History in the Museum and the Urban Landscape
The exhibition at the Kurgan City History Museum traces the city’s development from the founding of the settlement of Tsaryovo Gorodishche in 1679, through its granting of city status, to the development of its urban environment. Photographs and documents cover, among other things, the postal service, Kurgan’s fire brigade, the City Duma and railway construction. These topics offer a way to explore the city’s history through its public institutions and changes in everyday life.
The museum is housed in a stone estate considered an example of urban architecture from the third quarter of the 19th century. The estate includes an enclosed courtyard, outbuildings and a main house in the Russian Classicist style. The exhibition also features reconstructed sections of the interior of a city merchant’s house: a study, dining room and parlour. The estate’s architecture and the recreated rooms offer another way to explore the city’s history.
The Tsaryovo Gorodishche Cultural and Historical Complex was established in 2013 in memory of the first settlement, after which Kurgan was originally named. Historical tours take place in the park. If you would like to include one in your itinerary, it is best to check the dates before your visit.
Historic Routes Through Kurgan
The “Favourite City” bus tour takes you through the historic centre. Another way to explore the city centre is the “Red Line of Kurgan”, a walking route through the historic centre. The route offers a walking exploration of specific sites connected with the city’s history; it is not the same as the bus tour.
Users of smartphones and tablets can access an individual audio tour of the Red Line’s sites via the “Mobile Guide”. This lets you follow the route with explanations of its stops. The bus tour, walking route and museum visits each offer a different focus: a trip through the centre, an exploration on foot or in-depth exhibitions.
If you would like to include several of these themes in your stay, they can help guide your choice of holiday apartment in Kurgan. Consider whether you mainly plan to visit museums, explore the city’s history or take a tour of the centre, then compare your accommodation’s location with the sites you want to see. Booking information is available for the bus tour; check the dates and details in advance.
