Museums and Monastery History
The local history museum in Kataysk displays a hoard of 320 copper coins. It was found in 2008 on the estate of merchant A. I. Petrov. The museum is housed in Petrov’s merchant’s house, built in 1881, a historical and architectural monument of regional significance. The find connects a specific place with an exhibit that you can see in the museum today.
The monastery museum in the village of Borovskoye exhibits personal belongings of the priest-martyr Arkady Borovsky and old religious items from St. Nicholas Church. The museum was founded in 2018 to study the church’s history and preserve the memory of the clergy who served there.
The Verkhtechensky Holy Trinity Convent was founded in 1680 by Dalmat of Iset on the banks of the Iset in the village of Verkhnyaya Techa. Until 1764, it was affiliated with the Dalmatovsky Monastery for men, followed its monastic rule, and was supported by it. Its modern revival began in 1995: by decision of the Holy Synod, the convent regained the name Svyato-Vvedensky, and monastic life resumed.
Bogs and Distinctive Landforms
Birch forest grows on the slopes of Ivanov Kamen, with hawthorn, bird cherry, guelder rose and alder buckthorn. Dense stands of ferns and a variety of forest herbs grow below. The vegetation described ranges from trees and shrubs on the slopes to ferns and herbs beneath them.
Ochoniny Brows is a landform created by water erosion on the Sinara, where two cut banks converge. The raised bog complex comprises three areas: the Mokhovoye bog, Bolshoy Bor and Malyy Bor. These are sphagnum bogs, with stands of bog forms of Scots pine growing in some places.
The plant life takes centre stage at Pyshma Bog. More than 100 species of vascular plants occur there in bog, aquatic, riparian aquatic and wet-meadow habitats. The bog complex is characterised by rare plant species listed in the Red Data Book of Kurgan Oblast.
