Yeysk: Poddubny Park, Museums and City History
Accommodation in Yeysk
Yeysk brings together a city history traced back to a decree issued in 1848 and a personal tribute to wrestler Ivan Poddubny. His memorial museum is located in Poddubny Park, which is also a venue for concerts, competitions, play programmes and festivals. This offers two distinct cultural perspectives: you can explore the city’s development or learn about one person’s life through Poddubny’s biography. The park’s activities add an entertaining dimension.
Yeysk between city history and Poddubny
Yeysk’s history is traced back to a decree by Emperor Nicholas I dated 6 March 1848. It concerned the opening of the port city of Yeysk on the Sea of Azov. The V. V. Samsonov Historical and Local History Museum was established later, on 5 May 1920. These dates mark different points of reference: 1848 belongs to the city’s recorded history, while 1920 marks the establishment of the historical and local history museum. Those interested in the town’s development can consider this perspective alongside the more personal story of Poddubny.
The memorial museum in Poddubny Park is dedicated to professional wrestler Ivan Maksimovich Poddubny. After returning from the United States, he came to Yeysk with his family in 1927 and lived there until his death. The circular exhibition is designed like a circus tent. At its centre are cast-iron weights, a 75-kilogram barbell and a 19.5-kilogram cane belonging to the wrestler. These objects give the tribute to Poddubny a tangible, physical dimension: alongside his life story, wrestling itself is also a focus.
Poddubny Park: events and greenery
Poddubny Park is one of the oldest parks in Yeysk and the Kuban region. Its attractions include rides, carousels, pavilions and prize games for children and adults. There are also free concerts by amateur and professional performing groups, competitions and play programmes for all age groups, as well as various festivals, events and folk celebrations offering prizes and souvenirs. The programme brings together music, games and festivities.
The park’s planting also shapes its character: 200 different species of trees and shrubs grow there, including rowan trees, birches, mulberry trees, spruces, pines and horse chestnuts. The composition of the park’s vegetation may change. The green spaces are another aspect of the park, alongside its specifically mentioned attractions and events.
For families planning a trip together, it is useful to distinguish between the different themes: the memorial museum offers a historical focus, while carousels, games, competitions and events appeal to other interests. The park’s activities are aimed at both children and adults, and include programmes for all age groups. This lets you tailor your choices to the interests of your fellow travellers rather than focusing your stay on just one type of experience. If you want to plan around a particular concert, festival or programme, check the event dates in advance.
