Ust-Labinsk combines the history of a fortress town with museums, public art and the river landscape where the Kuban and Laba meet. When planning your holiday, you can focus on exhibitions and military history, or explore the city’s different themes.

Museums: Crafts and Regional History

The Museum of Folk Decorative and Applied Arts named after I. A. Donchakov is housed in the home of a master woodworker. He created three-dimensional wooden sculptures, miniatures in bottles and wooden models of temple ensembles. The house museum of woodworker Ivan Alexeyevich Donchakov also displays photographs, personal belongings, tools and his works. Together, these exhibits offer an insight into his craft and the different forms his work took.

The main building of the Ust-Labinsk District Museum has six exhibition halls featuring archaeological, ethnographic and military history exhibitions. Two more halls are dedicated to temporary exhibitions. These include “Po sledam raskopok,” “V gostyakh u kazakov” and “Pamyat' i slava pobeditelyam.” Themes from different areas of regional history are presented side by side; the temporary exhibitions may change.

Fortress and Defensive Structures

The Alexandrovskaya Fortress was founded in 1778 on the orders of Alexander Suvorov as part of a defensive line. It was intended to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire. Sections of the palisade, earthworks and a blockhouse have been restored at the fortress. There are also faithful replicas of cannons based on historical drawings, made using late 18th-century techniques. Here, the fortress’s history and its tangible architectural features come together.

The 3rd Bastion of the Ust-Labinsk Redoubt offers another perspective on military history. It is part of an 18th-century defensive structure built to secure the border and protect against raids. The fortress and the bastion thus provide different ways to explore this historical theme.

Art in the City and Places of Remembrance

Open-air sculptures made from scrap metal stand in the park by Lake Kopytse. They were created by local sculptor Furkat Baychibaev. The central city park also has a light-and-music fountain. A mural dedicated to Alexander Suvorov covers the façade of a five-storey building. These works offer different points of interest: sculptures made from reused materials, a fountain and a large-scale mural.

On the high bank of the Kuban stands a monument to Musa Pinkenzon beside a mass grave of civilians shot by the Nazis. A memorial cross was erected in 2013 in the city park, at the site of the iconostasis of St Nicholas Church. Both places are part of the city’s commemorative culture and invite a respectful reflection on their history.

More recent discoveries also add to the historical picture: an inscription dating from 1946 was discovered in 2021 during façade work on a building in central Ust-Labinsk. The mouth of the Laba, one of Ust-Labinsk’s attractions, is also part of the river landscape.

Plan Your Travel Dates and Focus

The annual nationwide forum-festival “Byt' kazakom” is held in Ust-Labinsk and the hamlet of Argatov. It brings together folk traditions and culture with professional discussions; the dates vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the announced dates before making your plans.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Ust-Labinsk, your preferred focus can help determine the area: exhibitions and military history offer different points of interest from public art and the river landscape. If a particular event date matters, take that into account as well. This lets you tailor your stay to your travel group’s interests without combining the various sights into a single route.
