Taman: Discover Cossack Culture and History
Accommodation in Taman
Archaeological layers, a Cossack stanitsa with hands-on craft activities, and places commemorating Lermontov offer several different ways to explore Taman. If you want to plan your trip around history and regional culture, you can explore archaeology, literature, customs and cuisine here.
Archaeology and Cossack Culture
The Ataman exhibition complex is an open-air Cossack stanitsa located on the archaeological site of the necropolis of the settlement of Germonassa-Tmutarakan. The settlement preserves cultural layers containing material remains of different populations who lived there from the 6th century BC to the 18th century. The layers reach depths of up to 12 metres, and in some places up to 14 metres. This span of time and depth convey two distinct dimensions of this archaeological heritage: the long succession of settlement and the layers preserved in the site.
At Ataman, visitors can try their hand at pottery, blacksmithing, saddlery and weaving. They can also make a protective herb doll and a candle from pure beeswax, or learn to pickle vegetables using Kuban recipes. The Cossack farmsteads offer a glimpse into the everyday life, culture and customs of the Black Sea Cossacks. Together, these themes provide insight into both traditional crafts and ways of life and customs.
Literature, Local History and Legend
At the Lermontov House Museum in Taman, the literary exhibition “Dve poezdki Lermontova na Kuban” explores historical details of Lermontov’s travels in the Caucasus and his stays in Taman in 1837 and 1840. The two years provide a specific chronological reference for the exhibition and its connection between journeys in the Caucasus and Taman.
Another historical landmark is the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Taman, built and consecrated in 1793. The Turkish Fountain, a living spring, is also located in the centre of Taman. The fountain’s history is linked to an old legend. Taman thus brings together different ways of telling the past: dated biographies and local history, religious heritage and local tradition.
Culinary Experiences and a Regional Route
The Chateau Tamagne Enology Centre offers a range of guided tours, and its gastrobar serves wine and food pairings. When planning your trip, this offers a way to include a culinary focus alongside archaeology, literature and Cossack culture. Dates and prices may change, so check these details before making plans.
Beyond Taman, Krasnodar Krai offers a broader regional perspective. The “Vinnye dorogi Krasnodarskogo kraya” route presents the more than 2,500-year history of viticulture and winemaking, from antiquity to the present day. It passes through Anapa, Taman, Golubitskaya, Sennoy, Moldavanskoye, Novorossiysk, Abrau-Dyurso, Fedotovka and Gelendzhik. Taman is one of the places named on the route; check the route details in advance when planning your trip.
Taman as a Place to Stay
When looking for a holiday apartment in Taman, you can first decide which of these perspectives you want to shape your stay: the archaeological layers and Cossack culture, the literary and historical local heritage, or the culinary offerings. If you also want to include the regional wine route, check its itinerary as a separate part of your planning. This way, you can choose your destination based on the experiences that interest you most, without treating Taman and the region’s other stops as one and the same.
