Protochnyy lies on the left bank of the Belaya, combining a clearly defined riverside location with a place of remembrance. The river is the geographical reference point that helps situate the settlement and its landscape. There is also a historic memorial site, which adds a different perspective to a stay than the natural surroundings along the riverbank.

On the Left Bank of the Belaya

Protochnyy lies three kilometres upriver from Pervomayskiy. Near Protochnyy, the Belaya riverbed reaches a maximum width of 400 metres. The three kilometres describe its position upriver; the 400 metres give the maximum width of the riverbed at this location. These provide two different points of reference: the settlement’s position along the river and the extent of its riverbed. In the municipality to which it belongs, the Belaya Valley gives the natural attractions of the rural settlement of Pervomayskoye a distinctive character. This landscape description applies to the municipality; Protochnyy itself is defined by its position on the left bank of the river.

A Memorial Site from Wartime

Protochnyy is home to a mass grave for Soviet soldiers T. M. Veselkin, I. Ya. Strelets and A. Ya. Oleinik, as well as four civilians who died in 1942–1943. In 1955, a memorial was erected there to commemorate the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War. The names of the three soldiers and the number of civilian victims give the memorial a specific connection to the people being remembered. For travellers interested in history as well as landscapes, this memorial site shapes Protochnyy’s character in a different way from its riverside location.

Krasnodar Krai: Coastline and Wine Culture

Krasnodar Krai also offers distinctive landscape and cultural themes. In the «Azovskie kosy» nature park, sea waves and currents shape sand and shells into spits and islands with varied outlines. Bird colonies comprising various species of gulls, terns and cormorants are present year-round in shallow coastal waters, at the ends of the spits and on sand islands. The number of birds at any particular location varies with the seasons. This coastal theme is quite different from Protochnyy: here, spits, islands and seabirds shape the landscape, while there, the defining feature is the location on the Belaya.

At the «Anapskaya peresyp» nature park, visitors can walk along the coast on wide, golden beaches. Farther from the sea, the sand forms a series of high dunes. The beach walk and dune landscape offer a different connection with nature from Protochnyy’s riverside setting. Both themes are located in Krasnodar Krai and can provide different focal points for your trip planning.
