Otradnensky District: feather-grass steppes, yews and culture
Accommodation in Otradnensky District
Steep, rocky banks along the Urup, species-rich meadows and a karst landscape give Otradnensky District distinctive natural features. Museums and archaeological evidence also offer a glimpse into the area's history. When planning your trip, it is worth first considering whether you mainly want to explore landscapes or cultural subjects.
Steppes, forests and distinctive natural features
The Chekhrak protected area is located in Udobnenskoye Rural Settlement in Otradnensky District. Its habitats include steppe-like and species-rich meadows, shrub communities, and low-mountain and floodplain forests. Particularly characteristic are its well-preserved, species-rich feather-grass steppes, with tree-covered islands in ravine systems along the steep, rocky banks of the Urup River. Meadows, forests and riverbanks stand side by side here as distinct landscape forms.
European yew (Taxus baccata) grows singly and in groups in the natural monument “Tis yagodny Otradnenskiy” in Nadezhnenskoye Rural Settlement. The species is listed in the Red Books of Krasnodar Krai and the Russian Federation. The yews described here are between 70 centimeters and 6 meters tall, with trunks 10 to 25 centimeters thick. A seasonal detail is their red, fleshy seed coverings, which appear in August and September.
Other natural monuments each reveal different aspects of the landscape. “Plantatsiya oblepikhi” in the stanitsa of Udobnaya is a natural occurrence of sea buckthorn along the Urup floodplain and within a floodplain forest. The karst lake “Ozero Rogozhinskoye” lies at an altitude of 770 meters, 2.5 kilometers south of the stanitsa of Peredovaya; its water is described as clear and blue-green. At the natural monument “Urochishche Kisloe,” a horseshoe-shaped opening with forest, shrubs and mineral springs forms on the northwest slope of Mount Kisloy.
Individual natural features also make their own impression: the “Golova Velikana” waterfall cascades over two ledges and is 6 meters high overall. At the natural monument “Park yaponskoy sofory” in the stanitsa of Otradnaya, Japanese pagoda trees form a network of avenues. The range of features therefore extends from river floodplains and forests to a karst lake, springs, a waterfall and tree-lined avenues.

Check visitor arrangements before your visit. This lets you plan your cultural itinerary around specific places and subjects rather than treating the museums as interchangeable stops.

It is listed as a one-day route with a total length of 16 kilometers, 1 kilometer of which is on foot; travel is by foot and off-road vehicles.
