Mezmay: Gorge, Waterfall and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Mezmay
In Mezmay, a striking gorge, trails to a waterfall and routes to viewpoints come together. There is also a blacksmithing museum with an extensive collection and a described workshop experience. If you are looking for a holiday apartment here, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus mainly on hikes, views or a cultural visit as well.
The Guamka Gorge and its dimensions
The natural monument “Guamskoye ushchelye” (Guamka Gorge) runs along the Kurdzhips River from Guamka to Mezmay and lies within the rural settlements of Nizhegorodskoye and Mezmay. The gorge is three kilometers long and about 400 meters deep. Its walls are steep and vertical in places. Its width also varies by section: in the lower reaches it is 15 to 30 meters, and in the upper reaches 100 to 200 meters. These measurements give a concrete sense of the landscape that shapes the hiking trails in the area.
Hikes to the waterfall and viewpoints
One route starts at the southern edge of Mezmay and runs through the Kurdzhips Gorge to Isichenko Waterfall and a viewpoint in the gorge. The route is five kilometers long, with a stated walking time of three hours. The maximum elevation gain is 110 meters. Trail conditions and access may change, so it is a good idea to check the current situation before setting out.
Another route leads from the Mezmay village council to the “Mezmay-Kamen” viewpoint (Mezmay-Kamen). It is nine kilometers long and has a maximum elevation gain of 270 meters. From the viewpoint, you can see the plain settlements of Chernigovskaya and Samurskaya, the city of Apsheronsk and Orlina Rock. Distance, stated walking time and elevation gain are different planning considerations; they can be considered separately rather than treated as equivalent.
There is also a starting point for the walk to Isichenko Waterfall at Shestimetrovka, on the southern edge of Mezmay: from there, it is no more than 30 minutes on foot. The different starting points and types of destinations offer a choice between a gorge trail, a waterfall and a viewpoint. Mezmay also has 15 designated out-and-back routes of varying difficulty. A leisurely hike is listed as taking three to twelve hours.
Outdoor activities and blacksmithing tradition
Hiking is not the only outdoor activity mentioned in Mezmay. Other options include climbing, jeep excursions, horseback riding and cycling. This selection offers different ways to spend an active day; you can plan specific outings based on your interests and current conditions.
Routes to the “Kuznechnoe delo Kubani” museum (Kuznechnoe delo Kubani) are also among the destinations mentioned in Mezmay. The collection includes more than 2,000 historical objects and photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries. If a visit is possible, you can experience the atmosphere of a traditional workshop, try your hand at being an apprentice and take part in the creative process of making various objects. Check current visiting options in advance.
Choose a holiday apartment to suit your day plans
When looking for a holiday apartment in Mezmay, the focus you want for your days can be a good place to start: someone heading for the waterfall and gorge will have different destinations from someone planning to hike to the Mezmay-Kamen viewpoint. Match the location of your specific accommodation to the relevant starting point. The southern edge of the settlement is listed for the waterfall route, while the Mezmay village council is listed for the route to Mezmay-Kamen. This lets you take the routes into account when choosing where to stay, without confusing walking time, route distance and elevation gain.
