Kostroma: Romanov History, Church Art and Trading Rows
Accommodation in Kostroma
Founded in 1152, Kostroma offers a blend of dynastic history, church art, commercial architecture and engaging museum themes. At the Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery, where the Kostroma River meets the Volga, Mikhail Romanov was proclaimed tsar in 1613; the Romanov dynasty began here. In Kostroma, you can combine this history with a tour of historic buildings and insights into traditional crafts.
History and Architecture
The interior of the Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery features frescoes dating from 1685. They were created by a Kostroma painters’ artel led by Guriy Nikitin and comprise around 450 pictorial compositions across more than 1,000 square metres. Another trace of religious art is the Church of the Resurrection on the Debra: it dates from the 17th century and preserves its murals. The Epiphany Cathedral of the Kostroma Kremlin was rebuilt at its historic site.
The Fire Tower stands in Susaninskaya Square and is widely known as a symbol of Kostroma. On the banks of the Volga is the Ostrovsky Pavilion, which appeared in the film “A Cruel Romance.” Together with the churches and monastery, these places show different sides of the city’s history, from religious art to cultural connections.
Trading Rows and City Walks
The Red Rows, also known as the Gostiny Dvor, retain their original layout. They are Russia’s largest surviving commercial complex from the late 18th century. By 1791, 33 shops had already been completed there; the entire complex was finished in 1793. Today, the rows house shops, souvenir stores, cafés and a tourist information centre. This continues a two-hundred-year trading tradition, though individual businesses may change.
A classic walking route leads from Susaninskaya Square through the trading rows to the Volga embankment and the Ostrovsky Pavilion, then continues to the Church of the Resurrection on the Debra. Most of the main sights in the historic centre can be explored on foot in a day. Another themed option is the “Hares of Mazai” tourist route: it takes you to places in Kostroma associated with Nekrasov’s poem about Grandfather Mazai of Kostroma. The classic route focuses on architecture and the embankment, while the second highlights the literary connection. Check local access information and the current route of the “Hares of Mazai” before setting out.
Wooden Architecture, Flax and Cheese
The “Kostromskaya Sloboda” open-air museum of wooden architecture was founded in 1960 and is one of Russia’s oldest open-air museums. It displays original buildings from the 18th to 20th centuries, brought from different parts of Kostroma Oblast. The museum also includes izbas, barns and churches dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. It also brings together wooden architectural monuments rescued from the flood zone of the Gorky Reservoir.
A guided tour of “Kostromskaya Sloboda” explores the development of vernacular architecture, historic building techniques and everyday life in a Russian village. Group size limits apply to some programmes. At the Flax and Birch Bark Museum Estate, the tour begins in the flax hall and tells the story of flax cultivation over the centuries. You can follow the plant’s processing journey from stalk to finished product.
The Cheese Museum’s exhibition traces the development of cheese production in Kostroma Governorate, from the first cheese factory opened by Vladimir Blandov in 1878 to modern production. Kostroma cheeses are available for tasting. Cheese sommeliers help you identify nuances of flavour and aroma and explain which foods pair well with them.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which experiences you want to shape your stay: walks among the sights of the historic centre, or visits focused on wooden architecture, flax and cheese. Knowing that most of the main sights in the centre can be explored on foot in a day can help with planning. Compare the location of a specific listing with the places you want to visit.
