Verkhoshizhemye offers three different ways to shape your stay: regional themes at the local history museum, architectural and usage history at the Holy Trinity Church, and physical activity at the Shizhma sports and health centre. This combination makes it easy to plan your visit around specific interests: you can focus on cultural history or add some active recreation.

Regional History at the Local History Museum

The A. N. Zaitsev Verkhoshizhemsky District Local History Museum is housed in a former district administrator’s residence built in 1897. Its collection comprises more than 8,000 exhibits. The exhibitions cover everyday life and the history of the region, its natural environment, the work and wartime achievements of its residents, and the development of the district. The building itself provides a tangible historical connection, while the exhibitions broaden the focus beyond this single building to different aspects of the region. Visitors interested in everyday life, nature and history will find a wide range of themes here; by contrast, the church mainly tells the story of one particular building.

Architecture and Changing Uses

The Holy Trinity Church in Verkhoshizhemye is a brick church in the Classical style, built between 1787 and 1810. Its multi-storey bell tower dates from 1823, adding a later construction phase to the building’s history. The church was closed in 1930 and subsequently used as a cultural centre. It was returned to the faithful in the 1990s, and restoration work began in the early 2010s. Its architecture and changing uses are thus intertwined: the building tells the story of a long construction period and of changes throughout the 20th century, up to the start of restoration work. If you would like to see inside the church, check in advance what visiting options may be available.

Cross-Country Skiing and Active Recreation at Shizhma

The Shizhma sports and health centre offers a different focus. It is traditionally used as a venue for cross-country skiing competitions; residents and visitors to Kirov Oblast also use it for training and active recreation. The natural slopes are 100 to 500 metres long, with a vertical drop of 40 metres. The length describes the extent of the slopes, while 40 metres is the vertical drop; together, these figures give the activity options concrete dimensions. If you are interested in cross-country skiing competitions, check the dates before your trip.

Culture or Activity as the Focus of Your Trip

The three options differ in character: the museum opens up several regional themes, the church brings together architecture and a history of changing uses, and Shizhma focuses on physical activity. When choosing a holiday apartment in Verkhoshizhemye, it helps to use these options to decide what you would like to focus on during your stay. Would you like to explore history and everyday life, visit a single historic site, or plan some active recreation?
