Discover Yurga: Museums, Monuments and a Park
Accommodation in Yurga
In Yurga, you can explore the city’s history, art and active experiences at Kirovskiy Park. Museums and monuments highlight different aspects of history, while the park focuses on exercise and sport. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: would you rather focus on the history of the place, or set aside time for outdoor activities?
Museums spanning local history and art
The Yurga Museum of Local History opened on November 26, 1964. One of its dedicated focuses is the events of the Great Patriotic War. The “Marshrut Pobedy” (Victory Route) passes through streets named after Heroes of the Soviet Union A. P. Maksimenko and V. N. Isaychenko. Its stops include the memorial complex to Yurga residents who fell in the war, the Obelisk of Glory and G. V. Basyrov Square. The excursion explores the residents’ contribution to victory, as well as the deeds of Yurga’s wartime participants and home-front workers.
The museum offers this excursion to organised groups of ten or more. It must be arranged with the museum in advance. This is an important distinction when planning your visit compared with going to the museum independently: if you are interested in the “Marshrut Pobedy,” confirm your participation directly with the museum.
The Museum of Children’s Fine Arts of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East in Yurga offers a different way to experience art. Its largest collection consists of works by children, including traditional art from Chukotka, Yakutia, Tuva, Khakassia, Buryatia and the Amur region. These regions give the collection a broad thematic range. The museum’s programme includes guided tours, meetings with artists and art workshops; ask the museum about its current offerings.
Monuments and churches in Yurga
The monument to the Heroes of the Civil War stands at the intersection of Pobedy Avenue and Mashinostroiteley Street. It was erected in 1969 to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Kuzbass from Kolchak. It commemorates a different period of history from the “Marshrut Pobedy,” which is dedicated to the events of the Great Patriotic War.
Another monument is “Slava trudu” (Glory to Labour), dedicated to the “Yurgapromstroy” trust. It was erected in October 1982 to mark the trust’s 40th anniversary. The Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist and the Church of the Presentation of the Lord are also among Yurga’s sights. Together, these places offer different points of interest for a city walk focused on history and religion; no visiting hours or interior visits are assumed here for the churches.
Activities at Kirovskiy Park
The large, multi-purpose Kirovskiy Park is home to the Snezhinka sports arena, a skate park, a ropes course and a children’s playground. The facilities offer distinctly different activities: the skate park is suitable for skateboards, BMX and mountain bikes, scooters and inline skates, and visitors can ride and practise tricks there. The ropes course consists of connected sections for climbing up and down and moving horizontally, with obstacles of varying difficulty.
In winter, children and adults play hockey and skate at the Snezhinka sports arena. This seasonal use differs from the range of riding activities at the skate park. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Yurga, the type of trip you want can help guide your choice: museums and monuments offer a different focus from spending active time in the park. Keep in mind that skating and hockey are described as winter activities.
